She Doesn't See Him
Sarah Brightman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When she passes him by
She's a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And he knows she's a queen
Who deserves a king
But he is not a king
And she doesn't see him

When she dances
She moves him to a smile
He sees everything
Near her shine
There's a grace in her ways
That he can't contain
He has not that grace
Oh, he has not that grace

And the closer he gets
He can't help but hide
So ashamed
Of his body and voice
There are boundaries
We pass in spite of the war
But our own
We can't seem to cross

He has a way that surrounds him
So delicate
With a glory that reigns in his life
He is also so much that he is not
These things they don't see
And she doesn't see him
Oh-oh-oh
And she doesn't see him

There are things we can change
If we just choose to fight
But the walls of injustice are high

When she passes him by
She's a ray of light
Like the first drop of sun
From the sky
And he knows she's a queen
Who deserves a king
Someone other than him
So different from him

Oh-oh-oh
She doesn't see him
Oh-oh-oh

She doesn't see him
She doesn't see him

Overall Meaning

The song "She Doesn't See Him" by Sarah Brightman is a heart-wrenching tale of unrequited love. The singer of the song is hopelessly in love with a woman who doesn't see him. With every move and every step, she exudes grace and radiance, leaving the singer in awe. He knows she deserves a king, but he is not that king. He often hides and feels ashamed in her presence because of his imperfections. Despite all of his qualities and unique attributes, she fails to notice him at all. The singer accepts her inability to see him, and he understands the boundaries set in their relationship.

The lyrics also touch on social issues of injustice and inequality. The singer acknowledges these issues, and he has a fighting spirit to change them. However, the walls of injustice are high, and the struggles are deep-rooted, making it impossible to eliminate them altogether.

The song portrays the pain of unrequited love and the underlying societal issues effectively. It reminds us that often, love and emotions are not enough to change societal structures.

My mind is getting blown lol. I’m french and I watched the live action Astérix movies (the first two, at least) when I was younger. Except I totally forgot that this song came from the first Astérix movie.

Originally, the song was composed and sang by Jean Jacques Goldman, a hugely prolific and talented french composer/singer (really, everyone and their mother knows him in France).

I’m here because Sarah Brightman latest album is getting promoted right now in France, I was searching for the track list and I’ve read Goldman collaborated on a song. But it’s much more than a collab. It’s an old Goldman song from a french movie that Brightman sang in english for the english release (I had no idea the movies got an English dub and stuff ahah).

There are 2 (or 3... I dunno lol) English versions because the original song was initially from a man’s point of view (about his unrequited feelings for a woman... Obelix about Falbala in the movie).

The second version is adapted for Brightman, as she sings about her unrequited feelings for a man.

Anyway, I love all the versions of the song. But damn... I completely forgot about its existence until now !

I like to think of this song, and "He doesn't see me" as parallels from each person, because that would be so cute and so tragic. Like ... they both secretly love each other, and think the other great, but they don't realise the other person feels the same way and then they never get together. c':

As a real romanticist I simply love this. That platonic theme. One of my favourite songs.

@Le Monde de Chris That doesn't mean people can't enjoy this version.

And yet, the melody and the words are not from her. It's a french artist called Jean Jacques Goldman who wrote "elle ne me voit pas"... "She doesnt see me"
