Prayer of St. Francis
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy
O Divine Master, grant that I may
Not so much seek to be consoled as to console
To be understood, as to understand
To be loved, as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
And it's in pardoning that we are pardoned

And it's in dying that we are born to Eternal Life
Amen

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sarah McLachlan's song "Prayer of St. Francis" are a powerful meditation on the ways in which one can serve as an instrument of peace and love in the world. The opening lines ask God to make the singer an instrument of peace, with specific directives for how to achieve this goal. In every situation where there is hatred, injury, doubt, despair, darkness, or sadness, the singer asks to sow love, pardon, faith, hope, light, and joy, respectively. The second stanza adds a new layer to this message, encouraging the singer to prioritize service to others over being consoled or understood herself. By loving and pardoning others, the singer will also receive love and pardon. The final line brings the prayer full circle, acknowledging that by dying, one is born to eternal life.

These lyrics draw heavily from the prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi, a thirteenth-century Italian friar known for his devotion to God and his commitment to serving the poor. The prayer has become widely known and beloved, particularly for its emphasis on peace, love, and service. Sarah McLachlan's version of the prayer is particularly poignant, set to a hauntingly beautiful melody and sung with heartfelt emotion.
