It Might as Well Be Spring
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm, I'm as jumpy as puppet on a string
I'd say that I had spring fever, but I know it isn't spring
I am starry eyed and vaguely discontented, like a nightingale without a song to sing
O why should I have spring fever, when it isn't even spring

I keep wishing I were someone else, walking down a strange new street
And hearing words that I've never heard from a girl I've yet to meet
I'm as busy as spider spinning daydreams, spinning spinning daydreams
I'm as giddy as a baby on a swing

I haven't seen a crocus or a rosebud, or a robin on the wing

But I feel so gay in a melancholy way, that it might as well be spring
It might as well be spring.

Overall Meaning

In Sarah Vaughan's classic jazz standard It Might as Well Be Spring, the lyrics describe the restless and whimsical nature of the singer's character. The song suggests an intense longing, a yearning to escape and find oneself in new and exciting spaces. The opening lines compare the singer's state of mind to a willow tree in a windstorm, jumpy like a puppet on a string, and shows the restlessness the singer feels. She then follows with an admission that she knows she doesn't have spring fever, even though she feels exactly like she does. The second verse speaks of the loneliness she feels even while surrounded by others. She wishes to be someone else, walking down a new street, hearing words from a girl she's never met before. She is busy "spinning daydreams" like a spider, giddy like a baby on a swing. The last verse reveals that she hasn't seen any signs of spring yet, but her melancholy state feels gay, hinting that her intense longing for change and new experiences is as though it might as well be spring. The lyrics powerfully convey the sense of displacement and desire for something new that many people experience.
