Moonlight In Vermont
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pennies in a stream
Falling leaves, a sycamore
Moonlight in Vermont

Icy finger-waves
Ski trails on a mountainside
Snowlight in Vermont
Telegraph cables, they sing down the highway
And travel each bend in the road
People who meet in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely...

Ev'ning summer breeze
Warbling of a meadowlark
Moonlight in Vermont

Telegraph cables, how they sing down the highway
And they travel each bend in the road
People who meet in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely...

Ev'ning summer breeze
The warbling of a meadowlark

Moonlight in Vermont
You and I and Moonlight in Vermont

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sarah Vaughan's "Moonlight In Vermont" are an ode to the natural beauty and romance of the state of Vermont. The first verse sets the scene with imagery of a serene stream and falling autumn leaves, evoking a sense of peacefulness and harmony with nature. The mention of a sycamore tree anchors the scenery, adding to its vividness. The title of the song, "Moonlight in Vermont," is introduced in this verse, drawing attention to the night setting of the song and highlighting the beauty of the moonlit landscape.

The second verse continues with more imagery of winter in Vermont, with "icy finger-waves" and ski trails on a mountainside being described. The mention of "snowlight" adds to the wintery feel of the scene, and the contrast between the first and second verses ("falling leaves" vs. "ski trails") highlights the changing seasons and the versatility of the state's beauty.

The last verse repeats the first two lines of the song before introducing new imagery of telegraph cables singing down the highway. This connotes the sense of communication and connection between people, suggesting that the setting of Vermont can bring people together in a romantic way. The song ends with a mention of the "warbling of a meadowlark," adding to the pastoral feel of the song and emphasizing the peacefulness and harmony with nature that Vermont can evoke.

This was my Mom's favorite song. She was born and raised in Vermont. She passed away almost 26 years ago, at the age of 50. I miss her so much and love to listen to this song and remember her love it.

I got to see her in concert at Powell Symphony Hall in St. Louis in the mid-1980s; she blew the crowd away. She sang this as an encore; I let the teardrops fall. Magnificent!!!
