Romance
Sarah Vaughan
Brazilian Romance

As I keep watched in the darkness
You lay here beside me
asleep in the moonlight
your innocense is shinning
like a cigarrete that matches shakes
in my hand
and if you suddenly open your eyes now
you'd see all the tears on my cheeks and you cry too
You'd wish that the things I would say couldn´t be true
Well, maybe the night I'll just hold tight to you
And wait till morning to tell you goodbye
I´ll bring you the paper and coffe as always
Then I'll turn and you'll ask me where I am going
My heart will betray me but I'll leave you knowing
what we had is gone
You make a sound in your pillow
it seems that you call me
it starting to rain and the street lights look lonely

I think I should stay, at least another day
till the storm goes away.

Overall Meaning

The song "Romance" by Sarah Vaughan is a poignant and reflective ballad about a fleeting romance between two people. The singer is lying next to their sleeping partner, admiring their innocence and beauty in the moonlight. However, there is a sense of sadness and inevitability that permeates the lyrics, as the singer knows that their time together is coming to an end. Tears stream down their face as they contemplate leaving their lover, and they imagine that if the other person were to wake up, they would also be moved to tears. The singer acknowledges that they will miss their partner and the closeness they shared, but they also seem resigned to the fact that they must go their separate ways. The song ends on a note of uncertainty as rain starts to fall and the singer debates whether or not to stay a little longer.

Overall, "Romance" is a powerful song that deals with themes of love, loss, and the fleeting nature of human connection. It is a testament to Sarah Vaughan's incredible talent as a vocalist, as she is able to convey the emotions of the song with incredible nuance and sensitivity. The lyrics are beautifully written and packed with imagery, creating a vivid portrait of the scene and the emotions at play.

This is my favorite song on this album. It is just...so....captivating for the heart. The only thing on Earth more wonderful than Sarah Vaughan is - Sarah Vaughan with a string section, singing these exquisite ballads from Brasil....

one of the saddest romantic songs ever composed. Sarah's phrasing and nuance of voice really captures the essence of this melody. We will never hear the likes of her again. I am so sorry I did not see here perform live when I had the chance. Working 2 jobs and missed my chance.

@SeuPachequinho

I almost lost that opportunity too... Last time she performed in Brazil I got so obsessed about attending her concert... I got an advancement of payment from a poor job I used to have back then... it took me 3 months to pay it back! All my friends said I was crazy to do that... besides, I had to take 3 buses and a ferry both ways to go to the venue... less than a year later she passed away and all my friends then thought I totally did the right thing. I still hold that concert among my most precious memories.

@mitzigordon

I USED TO GO SEE HER PERFORM EVERY YEAR FOR MY BIRTHDAY. SHE WOULD COME IN OCTOBER TO A SMALL, INTIMATE CLUB IN D.C. CALLED BLUES ALLEY.
I FEEL TRULY BLESSED FOR THAT OPPORTUNITY. THE LAST TIME I SAW HER
THERE, SHE DEDICATED THE SHOW TO ME!
