Shake Down the Stars
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shake down the stars, pull down the clouds, turn off the moon, do it soon,
I can't enjoy the night without you, shake down the stars.
Dry up the streams, stop all my dreams, cut off the breeze, do it please,
I never thought I'd cry about you, shake down the stars.
I gave you my arms, my lips, my heart, my love, my life, my all,
But the best that I had to offer you, I found was all too small.
Crush every rose, hush every pray'r, break every vow, do it now,
I know I cannot live without you, shake down the stars.

Overall Meaning

Sarah Vaughan's "Shake Down The Stars" is a beautiful ballad that tells the story of a broken hearted lover who is unable to move on after a break up. The opening lines of the song are a plea to the universe to dim the light and dismantle the beauty of the world that surrounds her since she can't savor it in the absence of her beloved. She goes on to beg the elements of nature to halt all the things that once gave her pleasure, to make way for the pain that has taken up residence in her heart since their separation.

The second verse reinforces the pain she's experiencing by describing how she gave her all to her love, offering her arms, lips, heart, life, and everything, only to realize that it wasn't enough for her lover to stay. Although she believed she had everything to give, she ultimately realizes that it was too small for him to keep. Finally, the last verse beseeches the universe to break every vow, crush every rose, and hush every prayer since life holds nothing for her without her ex-lover. Ultimately, the message is one of complete and utter devastation in the absence of her love, hoping every corner of the world will dissolve as proof of her feelings.
