Misty
Sarah Vaughan & Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at me,
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand,
I get misty just holding your hand.

Walk my way,
And a thousand violins begin to play
Or it might be the sound of your hello
That music I hear,
I get misty the moment you're near

You can say that you're leading me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm following you.

On my own,
Would I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left,

My hat from my glove,
I'm too misty, and too much in love.

Overall Meaning

The song "Misty," performed by Sarah Vaughan and arranged by Quincy Jones, is a romantic ballad that describes the overwhelming feelings of the singer when she is with her beloved. The lyrics suggest that the singer is completely smitten with her partner, and feels lost and helpless in their presence. The opening line, "Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree," paints a picture of vulnerability and dependence, as the singer compares herself to a tiny animal in need of rescue. She goes on to describe the sensation of being on a cloud and feeling misty, or dizzy and disoriented, whenever she is near her love interest. The imagery of violins playing and music filling the air adds to the dreamy, romantic atmosphere of the song.

You are right. I'm German...

Here is the original Sarah Vaughan "Misty" recording from 1959 which surprised me when I was age 14.

So I think it is the best love song ever!

Think about the first lines:

"Look at me,
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand,
I get misty just holding your hand."

This recording is so fabulous that when Johnny Mathis heard it he fell in love with it and later recorded it and it became his signature song.  Quincy Jones and his orchestra are among the best in the world.  My hat is off for all involved in allowing us to hear and experience this wonderful song and unique sound of Sarah Vaughan's singing abilities and talent.  Thank you !!!
