Long Way
Sarahbeth Taite Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Made it through a whole party last night
And I think I only brought you up twice
Didn't turn around every time
Somebody walked through the door

Think I finally stopped checking my phone
I'm getting better at sleeping alone
So what you wanna hit me up for

It's just a short text
The one you just sent saying
"Baby, can I come over?"
And it's a short drive
From your place to mine
You know I wanna hold you
Over and over again
Like we did back then
Yeah, it'd be so easy to do
But I've come a long way
And it'd be a long way
Getting back over you

Just the thought of seeing that smile
Makes me feel better than I have in a while
You know I'm so close to giving in
But you're gonna do it like you've always done
Leave me crying right back at square one
I'm not going there again

It's just a short text
The one you just sent saying
"Baby, can I come over?"
And it's a short drive
From your place to mine
You know I wanna hold you
Over and over again
Like we did back then
Yeah, it'd be so easy to do
But I've come a long way
And it'd be a long way
Getting back over you

Maybe you're drunk
Maybe you're lonely
Maybe you're finally sorry for letting me go
But I really don't think so

It's just a short text
The one you just sent saying
"Baby, can I come over?"
And it's a short drive
From your place to mine
You know I wanna hold you
Over and over again
Like we did back then
Yeah, it'd be so easy to do
But I've come a long way
And it'd be a long way
Getting back over you

Getting back over you

Overall Meaning

Sarahbeth Taite's song Long Way is about the struggle of moving on from a past relationship. The singer is at a party and is able to control herself from mentioning her ex-partner very often. She is proud of herself for being able to sleep alone and not constantly checking her phone. However, her ex reaches out via text, asking to come over, and the singer is tempted to give in to the temptation. She addresses the thought of seeing her ex again and how they always leave her crying in the end. Despite the mixed emotions, the singer acknowledges how far she has come and how it would be a long way to revert to her old ways.

The first verse describes the singer's success in not bringing up their partner at a party, "Made it through a whole party last night, And I think I only brought you up twice." She is also proud of herself for not constantly looking at her phone, "Think I finally stopped checking my phone, I'm getting better at sleeping alone." However, the singer is then faced with the temptation of their ex reaching out to them via text and the prospect of holding them over and over again like they did back then. In the chorus, she acknowledges the difficulty in getting over them but also how far she has come, "But I've come a long way, And it'd be a long way, Getting back over you."

This song says it all for anyone who has been there. But it gets better and you don't even think twice bout them.

I was literally driving to see my ex, who called me to see him, in the middle of the night and listening to this song. On my way back home, I was crying. It isn’t worth going. Let go of him.

Even the thought of having to process going through getting over someone you love so freaking , is just draining.
I don’t even have any tears left to cry this evening. Like I’m so numb. That man is my world. It was like being given a gem after dealing with a 🐩 💩.. i pray one day he will see I am worth it. 😢
