An Accident in Paradise
Sasha & John Digweed Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Steven Connors had had a long day
His boss near fired him for not pulling his weight
So he headed down town to wash some of his wears away
He knew he couldn't go so far
He promised to see his song for his birthday
Even though Steven would rather not see his girlfriend that day
Paid for his drink and half eaten burger
And tipped the waitress more than he could afford
Because she winked at him as she took his dishes away

Steven placed his hands on the cold car door
Key in the ignition, switch the lights and wipers on
Showering on and off throughout the cold cool night (Around fourteen degrees)
He floored his way to the national road
On a speed and a rate on pace to meet his fate
Stevens fingers fumbled their way to the wiper knob
Once the road gained his attention again it was too late
The last thing he'd see was a bright white light
From the high beams of a stray oncoming semi

Matt Green had not slept in three full days
His co-pilot was awfully sick in the passenger seat
The truck broke down twice and his co-pilot was worryingly pale
He was on the best semi drivers in the state
He'd been working the job since he was sixteen
He tripped alright one days without sleep, slightly worse on two
Dealing with the hassels of the machine
Day three sun down in the wintery evening, Matt's worn eyes glued to the road
The pale tarmac burnt into his retinas, lines in the road blur together

Matt drifted away to his living room
Arm around his wife, cocoa by the wire
Dog in his lap, he was living the life
His dog started barking, Matt's awake, he was in the wrong lane
And it was too late
Sat in silence the suddenly still truck, through the windscreen he saw the limp body
Of the driver he'd apparently hit
In a button up shirt and broken glasses

Matt's head was spinning with blue and red
With sirens screaming all the time
They carried the poor boys body out the chevvy cruze
Matt prayed his family would be alright

Steven Connors died in a car accident on the way to his girlfriend's house.
Collied head on with a stray semi truck

Is Steven Connors in a better place
Is he alright? Is he in pain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sasha & John Digweed's song "An Accident in Paradise" tell a haunting story of two individuals, Steven Connors and Matt Green, who tragically meet in a fatal car accident. The song begins by introducing Steven, a man who had a difficult day at work and decides to go downtown to escape his troubles. Despite his reluctance, he plans to see his girlfriend on her birthday. As he sits at a bar, he reflects on his day and the waitress catches his attention, providing some solace. However, as he leaves and gets in his car, the combination of bad weather and his distracted state leads to a collision with an oncoming semi-truck, resulting in his death.

The focus then shifts to Matt, the driver of the semi-truck. He hasn't slept for three days, dealing with the challenges of his job and a sick co-pilot. Exhausted and inattentive, Matt finds himself drifting into thoughts of his peaceful home life, only to be abruptly awakened when his dog starts barking. He realizes he is in the wrong lane and has a split-second to react before colliding with Steven's car. The song describes the aftermath, with Matt witnessing Steven's lifeless body and the chaos that ensues with the arrival of emergency sirens. Matt can only hope that Steven's family will be okay, while grappling with the guilt and consequences of his actions.

The lyrics pose poignant questions about Steven's fate and offer no clear answers. The mention of him being in a "better place" and whether he is "alright" prompts us to reflect on our beliefs about life after death and the meaning of suffering. The song paints a tragic picture of how two lives intersected in a moment of tragedy, forever changing the course of their futures.

Grimiest of the Reaper

One of the greatest mixes in human history given the date it was recorded!

Christopher Dixon

No no, it doesn't need justifying. It IS one of the greatest mixes in human history. Dogs would disagree though.

Stilldream Festival

100 agree

Red Parade

Right up there with NE #1.

Adam Smith

Absolutely. Both cds way beyond their years. The only blemish is CD2's last track. Otherwise it's pure perfection/ brilliance.

Carl

@Adam Smith Whether you like it or not, Blue Fear is musically brilliant and unique and it ends the Northern Exposure journey very well.

Nothing will ever mean as much to me as the first northern exposure collaboration but this album is a true masterpiece. First heard it aboard the MV Reef Endeavour as a chef working from Cairns Australia in 1998. 2 weeks on, 1 week off, a cruise liner in the tropics, earning a fortune. Those really were the days!

Spencer Brown

I was only 3 when this came out but it's been incredible discovering this 20 years later and falling in love with it

Simon Taylor

Now I feel old! I was 14 and just about to get into this music scene.

dgjns100

what's truly amazing is this cd was mixed basically live off record players in 1 take
