6) Savant (Tucson, AZ) - Tucson, AZ resident, by way of El Paso, TX and Chicago, IL, Gregory “Savant” Daggett has always possessed a passion for music and literary arts. Involved in general music since age 7, and a trumpet player since age 10, he wasn’t officially exposed to hip hop until age 12. Although no particular emcee caught his ear right away, he was intrigued with the entire concept of an individual or a group of people speaking over instrumentation in an intensely rhythmic lyrical form, oftentimes telling semi-autobiographic tales relating to a fictionalized counterpart. He became inspired to write and partake of the art of emceeing after hearing the 1999 classic “Black on Both Sides” by Dante Smith and honed his emceeing chops at the lunch room ciphers of Chicago high schools Whitney M. Young Magnet and George Washington Carver. He has since dedicated every verse, every bar and every word to achieving the ever elusive sense of balance in this hallowed art form
Rise Up

You gotta second chance to dance.
You gotta rise up.
A revenge is sweet, it is in your feet.
You gotta rise up.
Show em how we roll on the dance floor.
You gotta rise up.
Like a phoenix through the flame.
That's how you get on top, that's how you stay on top.
You gotta rise up.
When they eliminate, you gotta levitate.
You gotta rise up.
When they give you pain, you gotta up the gain.
You gotta rise up.
Like a phoenix through the motherfuckin flames.
Now take your things, come, let's go.
Where no one has gone before.
I'll see you out there on the floor.
And everyone wants some more.
You gotta rise up.
You gotta second chance to dance.
You gotta rise up.
A revenge is sweet, it is in your feet.
You gotta rise up.
Show em how we roll on the dance floor.
You gotta rise up.
Like a phoenix through the flame.
Now take your things, come, let's go.
Where no one has gone before.
I'll see you out there on the floor.
And everyone wants some more.
The lyrics of Savant's song "Rise Up" are all about rising above adversity and proving oneself. The song starts off by encouraging the listener to take advantage of their second chance to dance and rise up from their past mistakes or failures. The lyrics encourage the listener to show their strength and resilience on the dance floor, as if dancing is a metaphor for overcoming obstacles in life. The lyrics then suggest that revenge is sweet and it's in your feet, implying that success is the best revenge and that it's important to put your best foot forward and show what you're made of.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "you gotta rise up" several times, emphasizing the importance and urgency of taking action to better one's situation. The lyrics suggest that rising up is the key to success, and that it's necessary to stay on top by continuing to push oneself and not giving up. Additionally, when faced with setbacks, the lyrics encourage the listener to "levitate" and "up the gain," suggesting that it's important to keep pushing and striving for success even in the face of adversity.
All in all, "Rise Up" is an empowering and motivating song that encourages the listener to take control of their life, overcome obstacles, and reach for success no matter what.
