The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums—Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)—were also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years—partly even before the hiatus—members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

The children play
Somewhere
Out there
Alone and out of place
Streets of illusion
Sooth the shattered fate
I've been a runner
I've been a sinner
I've been inside my head
I sit here staring
Never quite caring
And this is where it has led
These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake
Somewhere out there
Gardens bloom and grow
Children awaken
To a world they know
Somewhere the sun shines
Somewhere the light's kind
Somewhere they seek the day
Somewhere there's no scene
Somewhere the air's clean
But somewhere is so far away
These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake
Welcome children
From the other side
In the darkness
Your eyes are opened wide
Here there are answers
On the edge dancers
Here the night hides out sins
And if you listen
While the streets glisten
Here's where our story begins
These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake
The lyrics of Savatage's song Streets portray a dark and mysterious atmosphere. The song begins with the imagery of darkness falling hard, while children play somewhere out there, alone and out of place. The streets of illusion, despite their name, only soothe shattered fate, and the singer reflects on his life's past as a runner, sinner and his tendency to stay lost in his thoughts. He sits there staring, never quite caring, and wonders how he ended up where he is. The chorus emphasizes the continuously glittering streets that never sleep, putting forward the idea that the city is a place that keeps moving even when people are unaware or uninterested.
The second verse introduces an alternative universe where gardens bloom and children awaken to a world they know. Nonetheless, this world seems so far away. The streets, on the other hand, provide answers and an opportunity to seek the night's thrill, hiding out sins. The song ends with the welcoming of children from the other side, where they can find a place where their eyes are opened wide and where they can find answers. The chorus is then repeated, emphasizing the idea of the ever-glittering and sleepless streets.

I am the way
I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes
I feel your dreams
And in the dark
I hear your screams
Don't turn away
Just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
All I ask of you
Believe.
