Coconut
Saves the Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dimly lit walkways and avenues
Beneath bridges lead me through dreamy days
It's into the dark every time
Its no wonder I lost my mind and my memory
But I wouldn't have it any other way
Wander weary along the empty streets
And I don't mind my broken legs
I walk myself home beneath the stars
Strolling along the ocean shore and I wish for tidal waves
To carry me out to sea to an island that's all for me
To fade away
But I wouldn't have it any other way
Oh with no one there to tell me how to be
I'll grow my hair down to my knees

I befriend coconut trees
The breeze- breathing through the island heat

Evaporating in the sun
Is my number one priority
But I wouldn't have it any other way

No I wouldn't have it any other way
I wouldn't have it any other way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Coconut" by Saves the Day describe a longing for escape, both from society and from oneself. The singer speaks of wandering through dark, abandoned places, losing their mind and their memory along the way. But despite the hardships they face, the singer wouldn't have it any other way. They long to be alone, to grow their hair long, and to befriend coconut trees. They wish to fade away, to disappear into the ocean on a tidal wave that will carry them to a deserted island that's all their own. The singer prioritizes evaporating in the sun, living a life that's free from the constraints of society and the expectations of others.

The overall theme of the song seems to be one of escapism and self-discovery. The singer longs to leave behind the world and find themselves through their own experiences. They reject the idea of conforming to what others believe they should be, instead embracing their own desires and embracing the beauty of nature. The song speaks to a desire for independence and authenticity, as well as the need for solitude and contemplation in a world that's often stifling and overwhelming.

Song reminds me of my homie who passed away in high school, listened to this song to get me through it . 14 years later and it still hits

O.M.G. I've listened to his live acoustic version a ton (which is awesome), but this is absolutely amazing... Such a beautiful song, I don't know why it wasn't ever put out

@CrowClouds

God, I fucking LOVE this album

Not trying to romanticize drug use, but I first heard this song while going through serious heroine withdrawal. It was actually the first time i ever gave in reverie a chance. Had to of been summer of 06. Anyway, this song, the structure, the feel, the story and color of everything about this track simply glowed and attached to me like a tattoo. This song means a great deal to me. Its about escape, solitary and the madness of just wanting to fucking exist somewhere other than where you are. Still trying with every fiber of my being to learn on guitar lol.

In Reverie was put out. But the reception of the album was poor due to the drastic change of musical styles between Stay What You are and In Reverie. Criticisms include "not pop" and "Chris' low vocals. This is the most instrumentally sound Saves The Day Album by far. My favorite actually. I hated how they were labeled emo and were expected to sell an image as supposed to the craftsmanship. Conley and Saves the Day all rosters alike make beautiful music.

long time later, and it's still my favorite Saves the Day album. I started listening to them when Through Being Cool was big. This album cemented them as heavyweight musicians. Their following albums, with their partial return to pop with a heavier sound I think was an overcorrection based on feedback from critics of this album. They should have delved deeper into the psychedelic-folksy vibe that permeates In Reverie.

I'm surprised about this, actually I'd never listened to saves the day in my life until I came across this album during the worst days of lock down in pandemic, it became my greatest friend. I tried to find more songs like this, but this was the only album that had this kind of exquisite nostalgic sound, as funny as it is, this is the only album I like of them haha
