Everybody Loves A Drinking Man
Savoy Brown Lyrics

Well my daddy never drank no whiskey
He never wet his liver with gin
My momma said she loved nobody else
But she really loved the drinking man
Respectable though my daddy was
Until he heard of mama's sin
And we never saw my daddy again
Because everybody loves a drinking man
Everybody loves a drinking man
Well my uncle was a real good talker
He'd talk the beak off a myna bird
Until someone dropped a glass of whiskey in his hand
He never said another word
Because everybody loves a drinking man
Everybody loves a drinking man
So understand that people will judge you
On your good and not your words
So if you're looking for a favor or two
You may likely die of thirst
Because everybody loves a drinking man
Everybody loves a drinking man
Everybody loves a drinking man
Everybody loves a drinking man
The lyrics to Savoy Brown's song "Everybody Loves a Drinking Man" describe the paradoxical relationship between drinking and love that exists in society. The singer starts off by stating that his father was never a drinker, but his mother secretly loved a man who was. The line "respectable though my daddy was, until he heard of mama's sin" indicates that his father's straight-laced behavior changed once he found out about his wife's affair and started drinking heavily. The chorus repeats the phrase "everybody loves a drinking man" to emphasize that societal norms seem to accept and even encourage this behavior.
The second verse introduces the singer's uncle, who was a great talker until he started drinking. The line "until someone dropped a glass of whiskey in his hand, he never said another word" implies that drinking rendered his uncle speechless. The verse ends with the same chorus, highlighting the societal acceptance of drinking. The final verse is a warning that people will judge you based on your actions, not your words. The line "you may likely die of thirst" suggests that those who do not indulge in drinking may not receive the same level of societal acceptance.
Overall, the song portrays the idea that drinking is often associated with being a "man's man" or a social butterfly, and that society often looks past the negative consequences of heavy drinking because it is seen as a desirable trait.
