We Came Here to Rock
Saxon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We didn't come for their soul
We didn't come for their bigotry
We didn't come for their gold
We never said we were perfect
We'll lay it on the line
They can stick their censorship
Where the sun don't shine
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We didn't come for their apathy
We didn't come for their lies
We didn't come for their strategy
We didn't come for their wives
Don't tell us how to run our lives
We know what's right and what's wrong
They're just a bunch hypocrites
We came for one thing alone
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We came here to rock (came here to rock)
We didn't come for bureaucracy
We didn't come for their views
We don't need their mentality
We don't need their abuse
We've never worshipped the devil
That's just another lie
We just wanna have some fun
Some fun before we die
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
We came here to rock
[Repeat to end]
The lyrics to Saxon's song We Came Here to Rock are a direct declaration of independence and defiance against the critics, the authorities and the establishment that may try to impose their views or censor their music. The band clearly states that they didn't come for sympathy, soul, bigotry or gold, nor for apathy, lies, strategy or wives. They are not interested in bureaucracy, views, or mentality either, and they don't need to be abused or told how to run their lives. The message is resoundingly clear: Saxon came here to rock, to have fun and to express their own beliefs, regardless of what others might think.
The repeated refrain "We came here to rock" serves as a mantra of identity and purpose, a rallying cry for the fans to join in and affirm their solidarity with the band. The verses expand upon this theme by exposing the hypocrisy and double standards of those who might criticize or censor them. Saxon asserts that they never claimed to be perfect, but they are willing to be honest and upfront about their intentions and their music. They reject any attempt to limit or control their artistic expression and demand the freedom to be themselves and to enjoy their own style.
Overall, We Came Here to Rock is a defiant and energetic anthem of rebelliousness and self-affirmation. It celebrates the power of rock music and the spirit of individuality and nonconformity that it embodies. Saxon's message is one of liberation and empowerment, inviting the listener to join them in their quest for fun, freedom, and pure rock and roll.

I don't know why people kicked up such a stink over Innocence and this album. They are both more melodic sure but they are still great classic metal albums with meaty riffs, flashy solos and nice songwriting. This song in particular sounds like it was a retaliation to the PMRC who were witchhunting heavy metal bands at the time for being corruptive to the youth.
