James
Say Something Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're as tight as a hunter's trap
Hidden well, what are you concealing
Poker face, carved in stone
Amongst friends, but all alone
Why do you hide

Say something, say something, anything
I've shown you everything
Give me a sign
Say something, say something, anything
Your silence is deafening
Pay me in kind

Take a drug to set you free
Strange fruit from a forbidden tree
You've got to come down soon
More than a drug is what I need
Need a change of scenery
Need a new life

Say something, say something anything
I've shown you everything
Give me a sign
Say something, say something, anything
Your silence is deafening
Pay me in kind

Say something

I'm open wide, open wondering

Have you swallowed everything
Pay me in kind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "James" by Say Something are complex and thought-provoking. The first verse portrays the persona as someone who's hard to read and doesn't easily reveal their true feelings or thoughts. The persona notes that although James seems to have friends, he's alone and hiding something. The chorus begs for James to say anything or give some indication that he's understanding the situation they're in. The second verse talks about taking a drug to free oneself and how James needs to come down soon. The persona notes that they need more than just a drug - they need a change of scenery or a new life. The song ends with the persona asking James to pay them in kind and wondering if James has swallowed everything.

The song seems to be about a relationship where one person is struggling to communicate, while the other is doing their best to express themselves. The persona's frustration is palpable as they ask James to say something - anything. They seem to want to understand what James is thinking or feeling but are met with an impenetrable wall of silence. The drug references in the second verse could suggest that James is using substances to numb whatever it is they are struggling with.

Overall, "James" is a powerful song that explores themes of communication and connection. It speaks to the difficulty of understanding others and the importance of speaking up in a relationship.

It's new if you think about all the wonderful music that came out in the 1960''s before most of us were born or in preschool

This song is about loving someone with a drug addiction and not being able to tap into there mind and set them free, I love someone with a drug addiction, but I also suffer from a drug addiction to. This song has been making me cry for 21 years, maby one day there,ll be happy tears. James are one of the most underrated bands ever, and certainly in my top 3 favourites of all time along with the stone roses and Richard ashcroft /verve 💙💚💛
