Do You Want To Build a Snowman?
Sayaka Kanda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" from the movie Frozen tells the story of two sisters, Elsa and Anna, who used to be close as children. However, Elsa's magical powers to create ice and snow caused her to accidentally harm Anna, and as a result, their parents decided to lock Elsa away to protect her and others. This led to Elsa isolating herself from Anna and the rest of the world for years. In the song, Anna is trying to get Elsa to come out of her room and play with her. She suggests they build a snowman together, but Elsa doesn't respond, causing Anna to wonder why they can't be close like they used to be. Eventually, the song shows the passage of time, as Anna grows up without her sister and becomes lonely, talking to the paintings on the wall and trying to make the best of her situation. The song ends with Anna still hoping to reconnect with Elsa, and the suggestion that building a snowman could be a way to do so.

The lyrics of the song are able to convey the emotional depth of the characters, particularly Anna's loneliness and longing for her sister's company. The idea of building a snowman becomes a metaphor for their relationship and the hope that they can repair it. The song is also able to capture the innocence and playfulness of childhood, as well as the pain and complexity of growing up and facing difficult situations.
