Who Are You
Scarlett Johansson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They're lining up
To mad dog your tilta whirl
3 shots for a dollar
Win a real live doll
All the lies that you tell
I believed them so well
Take them back
Take them back
To your red house
For that fearful leap

Into the dark
I did my time
In the jail of your arms
Now Ophelia wants to know
Where she should turn
Tell me
What did you do
What did you
Do the last time?

Why don't you do that
Go on ahead
And take this the wrong way
Time's not your friend
Do you cry
Do you pray
Do you wish them away
Do you still leave nothing
But bones in the way
Did you bury the carnival
Lions and all
Excuse me while
I sharpen my nails
And just
Who are you this time?

You look rather tired
(Who drinks from your shoe)
Are you pretending to love
Well, I hear that it pays well
How do your pistol
And your Bible and your
Sleeping pills go?
Are you still
Jumping out of windows
In expensive clothes?

Well I fell in love
With your sailor's mouth
And your wounded eyes
You better get down on the floor
Don't you know this is war

Tell me who are you this time?
Tell me who are you this time?

Overall Meaning

In Scarlett Johansson's song "Who Are You," she tells a story of a toxic and manipulative relationship. The first verse describes a carnival game, where people are lining up to "mad dog" someone's "tilta whirl." This can be interpreted as people vying for a chance to take control over someone else's life and emotions.

Johansson sings about the lies that her partner has told her, explaining how she believed them so well. She asks them to take their lies back to their "red house" before she takes the "fearful leap" away from the relationship.

The chorus sees Johansson questioning her partner on what they will do this time around. Time isn't on their side, and Johansson questions their methods of coping, whether they cry, pray, or wish their problems away. The lyrics ask if they've buried the carnival, including the lions that once roared.

In the second verse, Johansson sings about how she fell in love with her partner's "sailor's mouth" and "wounded eyes." However, she understands that this is a toxic relationship and asks her partner to get down on the floor, indicating a submission of some sort. She then asks, "Tell me who are you this time?" suggesting that her partner has a constant change of character, making it difficult to tell who they truly are.

What a fantastic piece of music! And Scarlett's voice is so grainy, grippingly good! Had no idea she could sing!

@kookdior8980

wow, she's amazing, is really a beautiful voice

@BtzJd

Wow! I love it. The song is so sad, and the voice is perfect for this kind of music, so reflexive. Scarlett is awesome!

@1chriscarlone

I like her husky voice. I like the low harmony behind her. I like how she made it her own. I know I'm supposed to hate it but I don't.

@antunivanovic

Many constantly point out her singing. Yes, it's far from perfect but despite all that, the whole studio album itself is really surprisingly good in all of its imperfection - most important, it's one of those albums made recently that I keep coming back to. To sing live is ungrateful challenge for anyone, and the way Scarlett sings her AOL sessions is fascinating exactly for her hard efforts to sustain a note. And actually, she does.
