The core members were Josh Clayton-Felt and Michael Ward who would play club dates in Los Angeles, California as a duo accompanied by programmed drums and bass. The band signed with Capitol Records in 1990, and released their first single on that same year on 7-inch vinyl. Their self-titled debut, School of Fish, was released in March 1991, followed by their first single, Three Strange Days. Also during the same year, they appeared on a KROQ concert disc called the Acoustic Christmas. Their second album, Human Cannonball, was released in 1993. The album did not sell very well and was not as successful as the self-titled album. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up.
Singer Josh Clayton-Felt died on January 19, 2000 at 32 of testicular cancer. In the six years after School of Fish, he had released solo albums entitled Inarticulate Nature Boy (1995), Felt Like Making a Live Record (1996), Beautiful Nowhere (1999), Spirit Touches Ground (2002), and Center of Six (2003).
Guitarist Michael Ward went on to play with John Hiatt and eventually became a member of The Wallflowers. Chad Fischer went on to form the band Lazlo Bane, most known for original opening credits of the TV show Scrubs. He also performed music in the Garden State movie soundtrack. Christopher MacDonald, who played bass with the band on tour, but did not play on any School of Fish recordings, records synthesizer space music under the name Telomere (label Evenfall).

School Of Fish Lyrics

She's leaving because it's twelve fifteen
I wish she would stay the whole evening
Just wish she would stay and see what I mean
And I can't find the girl in the room now
Was there something that
I did not understand
I wish she was here to give ma a hand
But I fell in love tomorrow
I fell in love with her
Yeah I fell in love tomorrow
But she's got the final word, so I've heard
Well the girl in the front row is gone now
And the room that is full
Doesn't feel like it should
I guess I just waited too long somehow
I guess I just waited cause I knew I would
But I fell in love tomorrow
I fell in love with her
Yeah I fell in love tomorrow
But she's the final word, so I've heard
When you fall from the painting
Down to the cold hard floor
Well the world that was perfect
Isn't there anymore
The School Of Fish's song "Fell" is a melancholic tune about a missed chance at love. The song talks about a girl, who is sitting in the front row in a room, leaving early at 12.15 am, just when the singer wished she would stay longer. He cannot find her in the room and wonders if there was something he didn't comprehend. In his confusion, he can't set things straight and can't figure out his surroundings either. He wishes she was still there to help him out. However, he falls in love with her tomorrow but realizes that it may be too late as she has the "final word."
In the second verse, the girl in the front row is gone from the room, and the singer feels like his surroundings aren't the same without her. He admits that he waited too long and may have missed his opportunity with her. The song ends with the image of falling from a painting to a "cold hard floor," where the perfect world vanishes.
The lyrics of "Fell" are written sensitively, and the sad melody complements it. The song talks about an all-too-common situation of missing out on love, mostly because of our own hesitation or inability to read the situation. As the singer is left in confusion, the listeners can relate to the feeling of uncertainty and wishing for something that could not be.
