Saliva
Scissorkiss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Here upon my face
There'll be no more eyeliner
Traced upon my face
I'm not the good girl
I'm not the good boy
I'm just the butch girl
I can't cleanse myself for you
I won't cleanse myself for you
I won't cleanse myself for you
I use my own saliva
Here upon my face
There'll be no more eyeliner
Traced upon my face
I'm not the good girl
I'm not the good boy
I'm just the butch girl
I'm just the queer boy
I can't cleanse myself for you
I won't cleanse myself for you
I won't cleanse myself for you
I'll use my own saliva
I'll use my own saliva
I'll use my own saliva
I'll use my own saliva...
The lyrics to Scissorkiss's song Saliva speak to the idea of holding onto one's own identity and refusing to conform to societal expectations or pressures. The line "I use my own saliva here upon my face" is a powerful metaphor for the rejection of traditional grooming and beauty practices, particularly the use of cosmetics like eyeliner. This rejection of norms is further emphasized by the repetition of the lines "I'm not the good girl / I'm not the good boy / I'm just the butch girl / I'm just the queer boy". These lines assert a rejection of binary gender roles and an embrace of non-conformity.
The repetition of the line "I won't cleanse myself for you" reinforces the theme of refusal to conform, indicating a refusal to perform cleanliness or purity for the sake of others. This refusal is particularly significant in a society that places a high value on cleanliness, particularly in relation to gender roles. By insisting on using one's own saliva instead of traditional cosmetic tools, the singer is reclaiming their own bodily fluids and asserting their own identity.
