He emerged in the 1970s and at the time he was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. He began playing in various rhythm & blues outfits in Providence (Rhode Island), but subsequently shifted to jazz and the tenor saxophone. In 1976 he moved to New York City at, in part the recommendation of Roy Eldridge. He there joined Benny Goodman for a period of time. During this time, he also developed an alcohol problem.,[1] In the early 1980's he had formed his own quintet and toured all over the world. By then free from his drinking habit, in 1982 he had matured sufficiently to be able to break away from the spell of mainly Ben Webster and Zoot Sims, of whom he had been criticized of imitating. From this point on both his playing and his tone was very much his own.
Living in New York City, he toured all around the world during the 1980's, playing Japan and all over Europe. He was in particular a recurrent visitor to the UK, Sweden and the Grand Parade du Jazz, held in Nice, France. By the early 1990's he was ready for a next step and by 1994 when he released Organic Duke, he had developed a quite singular style: a large, well rounded but still focused tone and improvising, ostensibly still based on the swing idiom (especially Ellington), but incorporating more modern elements. During this period, he relocated to London, and formed his current quartet, featuring John Pearce (p), Dave Green (b) and Steve Brown (dr). He is currently active touring all over Europe.
He has had over forty albums as a lead most on the Concord Records label.
Come Back to Sorrento

I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
In "Come Back to Sorrento", the singer reflects on a past love that has left him feeling lonely and nostalgic. The song begins by admitting that the singer is the one who let his partner go, but he now wishes to forget those memories and move forward. However, the magic of the night they met seems to linger in his mind, hinting that he may not be as over the relationship as he thought.
The song then shifts to the night they first fell in love, where the sky was blue, the moon was new, and their eager hearts were singing. Yet, as time passed, the relationship ended and the singer is left with aching loneliness. He remembers every little thing his partner used to do for him, and every road he walks along, he still feels like he's walking with them.
Despite the passing of time and the loneliness he feels, the singer's heart still holds on to the hope that his lover will come back to him. Overall, "Come Back to Sorrento" captures the nostalgia of a lost love and the hope that somehow, someday they will be reunited again.

You went away
My love, you left me
I let you
I didn't try to stop you

I wanted to forget our memories together
Still, the magic of the night I met you

You've gone away
And you're not here with me anymore
This aching heart of mine is singing

Lover come back to me
Please come back to me, my love

Every road I walk along
Everywhere I go
I walk along with you
I feel like you're still with me
No wonder I am lonely
It's no surprise that I'm sad and lonely without you
The night is cold
The night is chilly and dark
But love is old
Our love has been around for a long time
And while I'm waiting here
As I wait for you to come back
This heart of mine is singing
My heart is still yearning for you
Lover come back to me
Please come back to me, my love
