He emerged in the 1970s and at the time he was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. He began playing in various rhythm & blues outfits in Providence (Rhode Island), but subsequently shifted to jazz and the tenor saxophone. In 1976 he moved to New York City at, in part the recommendation of Roy Eldridge. He there joined Benny Goodman for a period of time. During this time, he also developed an alcohol problem.,[1] In the early 1980's he had formed his own quintet and toured all over the world. By then free from his drinking habit, in 1982 he had matured sufficiently to be able to break away from the spell of mainly Ben Webster and Zoot Sims, of whom he had been criticized of imitating. From this point on both his playing and his tone was very much his own.
Living in New York City, he toured all around the world during the 1980's, playing Japan and all over Europe. He was in particular a recurrent visitor to the UK, Sweden and the Grand Parade du Jazz, held in Nice, France. By the early 1990's he was ready for a next step and by 1994 when he released Organic Duke, he had developed a quite singular style: a large, well rounded but still focused tone and improvising, ostensibly still based on the swing idiom (especially Ellington), but incorporating more modern elements. During this period, he relocated to London, and formed his current quartet, featuring John Pearce (p), Dave Green (b) and Steve Brown (dr). He is currently active touring all over Europe.
He has had over forty albums as a lead most on the Concord Records label.

Hereand there and yonder,
Wasting precious time
For no reason or rhyme?
Isn't it a pity!
Isn't it a crime!
My journey is ended,
Everything is splendid;
Has given me a wonderful idea
Here I stay!
It's a funny thing;
I look at you,
I get a thrill I never knew,
Isn't it a pity we never met before!
Here we are at last,
It's like a dream,
The two of us, a perfect team,
Isn't it a pity we never met before!
Imagine all the lonely years we've wasted,
You with the neighbours,
I at silly labours!
What joys untasted,
You readin Heine,
Me somewhere in China!
Let's forget the past, let's both agree
That I'm for you and you're for me,
And it's such a pity we never, never met before!
Imagine all the lonely years we've wasted,
Fishing for salmon,
Losing at backgammon!
What joys untasted,
My nights were sour,
Spent with Schopenhauer!
Let's forget the past, let's both agree
That I'm for you and you're for me,
And it's such a pity we never, never met before!
In this song, the singer is reflecting on their past wild and aimless wandering and realizing that they have been wasting precious time. The title of the song “Isn’t It A Pity” is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the regret the singer feels about not having met their current partner earlier. The song also acknowledges how the two of them were leading separate lives before their meeting, with the singer saying “you with the neighbors, I at silly labors!/ What joys untasted, you reading Heine, me somewhere in China!” However, they have now found each other and are enjoying being together.
The chorus of the song expresses the regret both partners feel about not having met earlier, with the singer saying “Imagine all the lonely years we've wasted,/ Fishing for salmon, losing at backgammon!/ What joys untasted, my nights were sour,/ Spent with Schopenhauer!” They both realize that they could have been enjoying life together if they had met earlier, rather than wasting time on their own.
Overall, the song is a reflection on the power of connection and the regret that comes with missed opportunities. It emphasizes the importance of cherishing the people we have in our lives and not taking them for granted.

Scott Moir's sense of rhythm, musicality, sensuality, natural elegance and delicacy as well as at the same time genuine and deep masculinity (not toxic one...) is truly unmatched. A true dream partner

Totally agree. I can't take my eyes off him during the group numbers in The Thank You Canada Tour (including this one).
