Mars
Scott Hoying Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

What did I say?
The room, it turned cold
Their eyes dart away
No texts on my phone
Maybe, like me, it′s been broken

What did I do?
Too quiet, too bold
Did I seem confused?
Every day, so alone
When did I become frozen?
Then you said

I don't think that you′re human
You must be from Mars
Which explains how amazing you are
Can we build a rocket and take off
Past the sun and the stars
And we'll fall in love on Mars

I hold on to you
You're so otherworldly
How do you do it?
How do you love me?
It′s just like the movies

Oh, the world disappears
We look up at the moon
But sometimes my fears
They just won′t vanish too
'Til you turned over toward me
And you said

I don′t think that you're human
You must be from Mars
Which explains how amazing you are
Oh, can we build a rocket and take off
Past the sun and the stars
′Til we fall in love on Mars

Past the sun, past the stars
I'm at home where you are
Through the night, through the dark
Not afraid in your arms

Past the sun, past the stars
I′m at home where you are
Through the night, through the dark
Not afraid in your arms

Past the sun, past the stars
I'm at home where you are
Through the night, through the dark
Not afraid in your arms

Past the sun, past the stars
I'm at home here on Mars

When I′m seconds from take off

You hold out your arms
And bring me back home to Mars

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Scott Hoying's song "Mars" convey a feeling of alienation and longing for a connection. The singer questions their own actions and words, wondering if they have unintentionally distanced themselves from others. They feel isolated and alone, yearning for someone who understands them. The mention of a cold room and eyes darting away suggests a sense of rejection or indifference from those around them. The absence of any messages on their phone further reinforces the feeling of being disconnected.

But then, someone special enters the picture. This person acknowledges the singer's uniqueness and declares that they must be from Mars, emphasizing their extraordinary qualities. The idea of building a rocket and escaping to Mars together symbolizes the desire to escape the ordinary and find love in an unconventional place. The singer holds onto this person who is seemingly "otherworldly" and wonders how they can be loved so deeply. The mention of movies and the idea of the world disappearing when they are together creates a sense of escapism and enchantment.

The chorus repeats the idea that the singer might not be human, but rather from Mars. This idea of being different and misunderstood is further reinforced. The song ends with the singer feeling safe and at home in the other person's arms, as if they have found their true place on Mars.

Overall, "Mars" explores themes of alienation, longing for connection, and the power of love to transcend mundane reality.

I’m a huge Pentatonix fan…I was watching this with my wife and she says, “honey, you can blink now”. She thought I was questioning my sexuality for a second, but I had that random vision of me singing that song to her. Yeah, I’d question myself too, since I hit repeat on that one a few times. Scott is friggin amazing…congrats to him and his fiancé 👍👍

Rebecca

Aww, this is really sweet!
