1) Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. During Screaming Trees' existence the band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations.
Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of proto-grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Green River, and Malfunkshun. Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.

Don't Look Down
Screaming Trees Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As we begin to travel mysteries unravel
Control just seems to twist around
Follow me and oh that sound
Don't look down
Never find that key somewhere
It served me well but now it's gone
Changing shape and end is long
Don't look down
Don't look down
Get the strangest feeling
Til both become the ceiling
I'm closer for you
You're closer to the secret I'm revealing
Don't look down
We go back to a time when
Things weren't quite so numbered
Like ashes in the air I'm being scattered everywhere
As we begin to travel the mysteries unravel
Control just seems to twist around
Follow me and oh that sound
Don't look down
Don't look down
Don't look down
The lyrics to "Don't Look Down" by Screaming Trees are both mysterious and cryptic, leaving the interpretation of the song open to the listener. The song is about the journey of life, its ups, and downs, and the uncertainty that comes with it. The opening line "As we begin to travel mysteries unravel," can be interpreted as the start of life's journey and the discovery of the world around us. The lyrics then express the struggle for control in one's life and the idea that it can be elusive and difficult to attain. The line "Control just seems to twist around" acknowledges the futility of trying to control everything in our lives. The refrain "Don't look down" seems to be a call to stay focused and not lose sight of our goals or succumb to the pressure of the world around us.
Another interpretation of the lyrics could be that they are referring to the fast-paced nature of society and the pressure to constantly move forward. This is evident in the line "Never find that key somewhere, so fire ties your walking stick." The "fire ties" could refer to the pressure of society to keep moving forward, leaving the walking stick behind. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is struggling to keep up, feeling like they are being scattered everywhere like "ashes in the air." The final line, "Don't look down," begs the singer to not become overwhelmed and to keep moving forward through the unknown.
Overall, "Don't Look Down" by Screaming Trees is a song about the struggles of life and the importance of perseverance. The lyrics are open to interpretation, making it a powerful song that many people can relate to.
