The lyrics of Scrum’s song Killing Time is a melancholic reflection on the pain of heartbreak and the ways in which we sometimes try to numb our pain. The song is divided into several stanzas, each of which paints a picture of the singer’s mental state and the ways in which they are trying to occupy themselves. The first stanza sees the singer sitting in his chair, feeling bored and apathetic as he watches the world go by outside. The second stanza finds him lying in bed, feeling even lonelier than before and turning to whisky as a form of escapism. In the third stanza, he’s out by the waterside, staring at waves and feeling very much alone, reaching for a brandy to numb his pain further. In the fourth verse, he’s sitting by his phone, wondering if anyone is home while he watches the news and sees nothing but war and devastation. He turns to smoking as a way of trying to take his mind off of things.
The final verse is the most cathartic, however, as the singer hears a knock at the door and is greeted by his friends, who eventually convince him to go out to the pub with them. Here, the singer and his friends turn to beer as a means of numbness, but the difference is that they are able to find some solace in each other’s company. Ultimately, Killing Time is a song about the ways in which we all struggle with pain and the need to find healthy ways of coping, whether it be through friendship, creative expression or something else altogether.
