To Lou Rawls
The lyrics of Sean Price's song "Imperius Rex" are complex and contain multiple references to different topics. The opening lines seem to indicate a sexual encounter, with a mention of big breasts and a subsequent request for sex. However, the tone changes abruptly with another voice interrupting and demanding that the rapper "spit that real shit." This voice claims that they are gorillas, and that "ape don't kill ape." This leads into Sean Price's verse, which contains several references to apes and leadership.
Sean Price describes himself as "truly a ape, Caesar the leader," and makes references to Peruvian flakes, college, prison, and guns. He claims to "put two in ya face," and does deeds of a demon. The chorus of the song repeats the line "I'm not Martin Luther, I'm flop corner loser," which could be interpreted as a dismissal of non-violent protest in favor of a more aggressive approach. The verse ends with a reference to Lou Rawls, who was a singer known for his deep, soulful voice.
Overall, the lyrics of "Imperius Rex" are dense and require careful interpretation to fully understand. They contain references to various cultural touchstones, including Star Wars ("I Chewbacca'd the chicken"), and references to Sean Price's own Brooklyn-based hip hop collective, the Boot Camp Clik.

β@Hextedyou're not too bright bro, you're writing a damn book to a comment from 6+ years ago π€‘ and never got one response or like, what'd you expect?
Hexted
Please donβt say that, I feel like yβall really donβt realize how disrespectful that is. It is not a positive thing when you say these game changing top 50 all time rappers were βunderratedβ itβs basically synonymous with βnobody cares about him, he isnβt a big deal in hip hopβ but you think itβs a good thing Bc youβre saying he SHOULD be a big deal. I just really donβt like it it comes off like you found out who he was super late, and instead of admitting that you shouldβve done research earlier, you pretend itβs hip hops fault. Itβs the communities fault for not making Sean P a pop radio artist or something that youβd hear every day. He isnβt supposed to be that, and even still heltah skeltah was huge. There is not one genuine hip hop head who doesnβt know Sean or Heltah Skeltah. Iβm just really sick of this trend of every dead rapper or even living legends being called βunderratedβ it isnβt positive in the slightest. Youβre just saying his career wasnβt that successful, he wasnβt that beloved or thought of as a great MC. You canβt say that isnβt what youβre saying, what else does underrated mean if not βunder appreciated, not as successful as they shouldβve been, not as respected by their peers as they shouldβve beenβ like why would Sean or his family want that to be his legacy? He wanted to be remembered as this grimy old school dude who could snap any rapper neck, a dude who every rapper is scared of. And that WAS his legacy, so I feel like itβs very pointless to take that away from him and paint him as this poor underground rapper who has trouble making ends meet. Look at the features heβs had on every solo album, these arenβt accidents
