@rainbow Balanced diet is a meme. Its all relative. If you were in the Nenet tribe a "balanced diet" would be head-to-tail raw reindeer. The 'balance" would be eating the entire animal.

This idea of "balance" is based off an implicit trust we have in our grocers to supply us everything we need, but the VERY THING IN QUESTION is how much we are obligated to buy.

I do believe in the Matthew 6:26 "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not..." verse, and by extension all diets are kind of memes in that same sense as its not only down to the genetic level of how your body handles things, but theres also logistics and politics involved as well. But there is definitely a hierarchy to diets and some of them such as veganism are a short-term fast at best and starvation at worst.

The worst is when people do veganism as an ethical/ascetic position but then try to have their celery stick and eat it too and sell the nutrition side. Vegetables are only good to add extra bulk or to add fiber which MAY help in digestion. But digestive problems are usually related to fat/protein balance.

What in your mind is a "balanced diet" related to the Standard American Diet?

I finally started losing my weight after going on keto.

Automatically lowering your insulin.

Keep in mind, keto isn't for everybody. But for me it worked. It also meant eating waay less calories daily cause I'm not nearly as hungry.

This is good though.

People forget that our bodies a different and no matter who you are or what diet you go on. You still have to use your brain.

Interesting film. I remember when I crossed the 25 year line in my life and noticed that my metabolism was slowing down and I was gaining weight. I ate McDonalds before, and I continued to eat McDonalds after and lost weight.

What was the difference? I ATE THE RECOMMENDED DAILY CALORIC INTAKE (sometimes less) AND LOST WEIGHT, WHILE STILL EATING MCDONALDS, SOMETIMES TWICE A WEEK. Now mind you that my insulin levels have always been normal and I have never been obese, but I am probably in the best shape of my life right now (cardiac, bmi, and muscular) and I just ate a #1 Big Mac meal last night (no soda). It was awesome.

Now I don’t really eat much fast food anymore, but if you really love fast food and want to lose weight, you can. You need to properly assess how much energy/calories you are putting into your body and either cut it down, figure out how much energy you need to expend (exercise), or both.

You can eat a Big Mac meal and not feel guilty because you know exactly how many calories you are eating that day.

Its really not that hard to do the math. Its a little more difficult to discipline yourself while ordering exactly what you are going to eat and no more, but really nothing that difficult.

Over time it gets easier and my stomach has actually “shrunk” (aka I get full sooner) so I now naturally eat a controlled portion without needing to count anything.

As someone who has been doing keto for a few weeks with massive success, I think this guy is spot on with everything, EXCEPT when it comes to addictions.
Addiction is FAR more complex in psychology than "oh well I was able to stop cold turkey with ease, so that means that it's not addictive and people can't get addicted to it". People that have addictions often are people who have deep stemmed issues in life (maybe childhood abuse/trauma) high stress, depression, low self worth/self esteem issues, etc. In other words, they're usually fucked up in more ways than one or have something missing. We see this almost always without fail in shows like my 600lb life. The often bedridden people eating themselves to death on there always have a tragic story of childhood abuse, a close family member lost or something else very bad happen to them that caused the stress/depression (which is also related to hormones) that caused them to start eating more and more crap...which cased even more depression and feeling of low self worth because of the effect on too much sugar on the brain and also from getting fatter and fatter...so they eat even more....it's a vicious cycle.
NOW, I'm not saying that the junk food industry is to blame for that, or that everyone who had a tough hand in life medicates with food, but just pointing out that people deal with shit in different ways, and food addiction is very real.
That's why you have some people that do certain "recreational drugs" (coke, etc) or prescription drugs or alcohol just occasionally or as needed and are able to stop after one go, etc..... but you have other people who do a hard drug once or just a few times and they're hooked, because it's so pleasurable to them that they see it as an escape from any pain, stress, or depression they're feeling....so keep doing it at whatever cost... even if they have to take more and more of it to have the same effect, and it ruins their life or even threatens to kill them.
Now that's not to say that people with addictions to carb laden junk food are helpless or shouldn't take responsibility for their actions, I'm living proof that anyone can.....but just saying I know first hand that sometimes people need help, extra motivation, and/or education to escape from the clutches of food addiction. We should try to understand it more and offer encouragement and knowledge to these people instead of assuming "well you just want to be fat, it'd be easy for you to change at any moment, so therefore I have no reason to give you any sympathy, or even to treat you like a fellow human being".

I think his point was that if Mcdonalds and fast food in general were really genuinely addictive, two separate people who ate the stuff for a solid month straight wouldn't be able to just kick it with ease. Anyone can get addicted to nearly any substance or even action done regularly, but there are definitely things that are addictive to nearly anyone on the planet regardless of their personality and situation. As psychologically complex as addition is, nearly anyone who did meth just once every day for a month would become addicted, (on top of probably dying) whether they had an addictive personality or not, whether they had the least stressful and painless life possible or could barely get out of bed because of the pain and depression. Also, there are addictions that are incredibly dangerous to both oneself and others and there are addictions that are all but completely harmless and don't hurt anyone including the one who is addicted. A meth addict is going to screw up their life and the lives of those around them to feed their addiction. Someone who has an addiction to Big Macs? Probably not.

Naughton is pointing out that if Mcdonalds was really so addictive as Spurlock claimed, both he and Naughton would have been strongly stuck for weeks, months, or even years struggling to avoid eating the stuff, just as recovering heroin addict or an alcoholic would with their addictions. Even worse because avoiding Mcdonalds completely would be even harder than a alcoholic trying to avoid even encountering alcohol if not impossible. At least a recovering heroin addict is incredibly unlikely to even see or hear of heroin without actively looking for it. Instead they both threw off the food with no problems and in Spurlock's case went back to a diet that couldn't possibly be more different from Mcdonalds menu if he tried and easily lost the weight he gained a few months later.

We are misinformed about food. They tell us not to eat butter, too eat sugar and wheat! Wheat makes you crave for sweats. I went off all wheat, bread, pasta, rice, so on. I lost my desire for sugar. I got off sugar so on. I always drank full cream milk, butter, saturate fat. The food industry adds wheat and sugar to almost all products to get you hooked to their foods to make lots and lots of $MULA$!

Addiction does not work that way if you "Don't want it anymore"... "never want to see it again"... and can quit cold turkey without any repercussions.
