I agree for the most part, but in this case, Kilmer did that to himself. When you’re that brutal as a coach, your players will eventually get tired of it and rebel. Sure, high school football players, like their other classmates, are young, impressionable teenagers who are usually easy to manipulate, but they are still big, tough guys who can easily overpower an older man like Kilmer. All it takes is a smart leader to band them together, which Moxon was. You saw what happened at the end.

I love this movie and i think it is one of the best because it touches on what goes on in high school sports namely football not only in Texas but in other states also with the corruption and playing hurt and the boosters and old people remembering their football glory and forcing it on kids, this movie really touches on that subject

I was a back up QB my freshman year 1996 @ Hart High Newhall, CA. Kyle Boller (future NFL QB) was the year ahead of me. He got hurt so after some shuffling I became the starter for the season. Its was tense but I loved it and we won Foothill League. This movie and scene resonated with me big time. Great memories!

In ten years of playing football I had coaches that berated me and embarrassed me in front of the whole team a bunch of times but they did that to everybody. It toughens you up it really does but I never had a coach put his hands on me like that. Don't ever let a coach put his hands on you.

I’ve never played football (I played youth basketball) but it’s important that when a coach yells at a player the message should be positive, verbal abuse is inexcusable. And there’s studies out there showing verbal and emotional abuse does more damage than physical. And coaches aren’t perfect they’ll say out of line comments in anger because when they’re pissed they can lose control themselves. Even coaches tell players to pay more attention to the message rather than the tone of voice.

That's kinda what I thought. Scout team is supposed to run the plays of the upcoming opponent for the sake of preparation. Close-minded coaches are a pain to deal with, don't get me wrong. But this doesn't make a lot of sense.

Sad part is that Mox turned out to probably be a better quarterback than Lance. Mox just was more interested in getting out of the town, away from Kilmer and football and not repeating his dad's life than he really was playing so was quite happy to play second string.

Not that he was ever going to be first string as long as Kilmer thought the teams only shot at winning was Lance. Not until Lance's knee finally gave out anyway.

The thing is, Bud Kilmer was right. Yes having players play hurt by shooting them up with cortisone shots is completely inappropriate and he should have been fired for that. But as far as his dealings with Johnny Moxon, he was absolutely right. Moxon saw that Mississippi Valley averaged 44 points a game using the Oopty Opp offense. So after one practice of being the starting QB, Moxon decides to change the offense that Kilmer has probably been running a winning 23 district titles with for the past 30 years. Kilmer tells Moxon that they are a running team. Well, they are. They have an All-State type running back, who averages 133 yards per game. Even with 2-time all-state QB Lance Harbor, the offense went through Wendell Brown. And then there is the all night drinking party the night and morning before a game. WTF was that about. Johnny Moxon didn't care about playing football and it showed.

Yeah, I'm a coach and I would get on them too.

But I would also talk to them after practice and hear out their ideas. If a player is genuinely interested in X's and O's, you don't want to stifle that passion. I may even encourage them to pass their notes and research onto me. Maybe there would be something that could be used. Maybe not. If I couldn't use any of their suggestions, I would explain why, but commend their enthusiasm and encourage them to continue to keep their thinking cap on.

quads left and iso right? that's goofy as all hell got 5 receivers so you're essentially playing with the QB all by himself in the backfield which makes you vulnerable to the the blitz... if they come with a 6 man rush (4DL, 2LB) which isn't that uncommon it screws the whole thing over especially if they got the end and linebacker coming off the C and D gap look at 0:56 if the outside LB walks up and works outside the D end he's got a clear way to the sack

If this ain’t liberty Hill Texas to a T. Every level of football from peewee through high school has 10 to 20 dads on the coaching staff yelling at these kids and living vicariously through their sons because they peaked in high school football themselves and couldn’t make it any farther. I was even told at one point I couldn’t coach youth league baseball because I did not have a son on the team… no BS, that was literally the reason I was given even though I played baseball in college for four years. It’s really sad to see the way these kids are constantly over-coached and put underneath needless pressure for years.

New generation athletes can’t take that kind of constructive criticism. The parents step in the coaches way of them coaching their child. The coach should be the coach and the parent should be the parent.

Kiliki U What's so wrong with being called a shithead? Stuff like that builds character! It's not so much the insult itself as it is being able to take it, to handle adversity. In real life, you can learn and know the difference between someone issuing you an insult to actually brand you by it or to motivate you in some way. And we all know how mean that outside world is, so yea, let the "abuse" roll.

This sort of thing doesn't build good character, it ruins it. "Taking it", tolerating bad behavior, is the opposite of good character. Someone with good character would have responded to the coach by apologizing, if the playcalling was actually inappropriate, but then also calling the coach out on his bad behavior. A playing career of sucking it up at best produces a lifetime of moral cowardice, and at worst a personality that apologizes for or actively participates in and promotes evil.
