Careless Whisper
Seether Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies
Something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
And all it's sad goodbyes

I'm never going to dance again
These guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I've been given
So I'm never going to dance again
The way I danced with you
Oh

Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find

I'm never going to dance again
These guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I've been given
So I'm never going to dance again
The way I danced with you
Oh

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We've hurt each other with the things we want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
Now who's going to dance with me?
Please stay

I'm never going to dance again
These guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I've been given
So I'm never going to dance again
The way I danced with you
Oh

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Overall Meaning

Seether's version of "Careless Whisper" is a inspired cover of George Michael's original song. The opening lyrics convey feelings of uncertainty and hesitation as the singer takes his partner’s hand to dance, all while something in their eyes reminds him of the silver screen and its tragic goodbyes. The music then fades away as the singer admits that he is never going to dance again. He reveals that his guilt-ridden feet have got no rhythm and that although it's easy to pretend otherwise, he knows that his partner isn't naive enough to fall for his act. He confesses that he should have never cheated a friend and that he has wasted a precious opportunity. He then repeats that he will never dance again, in the way that he danced with his partner.

In the next part of the song, the singer talks about how time can't mend the careless whispers of a good friend. He believes that ignorance is truly a blissful state of mind as the truth brings only pain. He repeats that he's never going to dance again in the same way, before inviting his partner to stay, acknowledging that the music is loud and it's better to stay together.

I loved the original, but seether kills it in an awesomely haunting way: “Pain is ALL you’ll find” and that guitar

The only bad thing about good songs is that they always end.
