Empire
September Mourning Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My heart's spent on your conscience
It's in debt but I'm not
I'm always more than honest
It hurts more than I want
I'm tearin' through the conflict
I'm sick of all the bullshit
I can't breathe through the poison To cleanse me of your haunting
Oooh
I never meant to give up my innocence
Oooh
Patience runs deep in my veins and I drown in it

Cause you gave me an empire
You made me your only queen
I didn't know that my throne was built on guilt and fantasy
You gave me an empire
You already knew you'd leave
I watched it all as you burned down these walls
The ashes fall, like snow they bury me

I gave you someone empty
And scraped everything out
Kept all of my insides
And I left you with the doubt
I won't give you the light that you're swearing that you need
I'm tryin' to contain it so I'm here still when you leave

Oooh
You never meant to give up indifference
Oooh
Your pulse runs deep in my veins and I drown in it

Cause you gave me an empire
You made me your only queen
I didn't know that my throne was built on guilt and fantasy
You gave me an empire (gave me an empire)
You already knew you'd leave
I watched it all as you burned down these walls
The ashes fall, like snow they bury me

You bury me
In the madness of my heart

You gave me an empire
You made me your only queen
Ididn't know that my throne was built on guilt and fantasy
You gave me an empire (you gave me it all)
That you already knew you'd leave

I watched it all as you burned down these walls
The ashes fall, like snow they bury me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of September Mourning's Empire speak about a toxic and manipulative relationship, where the singer was given an empire by their lover, who made them their only queen but the throne on which they sat was built on guilt and fantasy. The singer is torn between the love for their lover and the realization that the empire they were given was never real. They feel that their heart and mind are spent on their lover's conscience and is in debt, but at the same time, they are honest and tearing through the conflict. The singer can't breathe through the poison that their lover has left them with, and they want to cleanse themselves of the haunting memory.

The chorus speaks about how the lover gave the singer an empire, and they became their only queen. The singer did not realize that the throne was built on guilt and fantasy. The lover already knew that they would leave, and the singer watched as they burned down the walls of the empire. The ashes fell like snow and buried the singer. The lyrics describe how the manipulative relationship has left the singer feeling empty and trying to contain themselves so they can still be there when their lover leaves.

Overall, the song Empire by September Mourning is a powerful representation of an emotionally toxic relationship, highlighting the pain and energy it can take to move on from something that was never real.

First time I saw this band was on my birthday. The supporting bands backed out of the show. But they rocked the shit out of the venue. Wish they would come back to Clarksville. Would definitely see them again. And they are very humble down to earth people too. Just makes the experience even better.

Emily sounds incredible in the lower vocal register, hopefully something she explores in the future. The music has a great haunting tone that fits really well with the last issue's story.

@CoseleyBenny1969

There are moments of real purity in Emily's voice, especially in the lower ranges. Looking forward to the new album.
