Arise
Sepultura Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Obscured by the sun
Apocalyptic clash
Cities fall in ruin
Why must we die?

Obliteration of mankind
Under a pale gray sky
We shall arise

I did nothing, saw nothing
Terrorist confrontation
Waiting for the end
Wartime conspiracy

I see the world, old
I see the world, dead

Victims of war, seeking some salvation
Last wish, fatality
I've no land, I'm from nowhere
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

Face the enemy
Manic thoughts

Religious intervention
Problems remain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "Arise" by Sepultura portray a worldview that is bleak and dystopian, and the listener is taken through a journey of destruction, death, and despair. The opening lines, "Obscured by the sun, apocalyptic clash, cities fall in ruin, why must we die?" suggest a world that has been ravaged by war and calamity, with people searching for meaning and a purpose in such a hopeless existence.

The next few lines expand on this theme, with the destruction being summed up in the phrase "obliteration of mankind". The lyrics that follow make reference to a "pale gray sky", perhaps indicating that the world has become so damaged that even the natural elements are failing us. The chorus, "We shall arise", offers a glimmer of hope, but it is not clear whether the subject is speaking of a physical or spiritual resurrection.

The rest of the lyrics are filled with images of desperation and suffering, with the singer lamenting that they "did nothing, saw nothing" in the face of "terrorist confrontation" and "wartime conspiracy". There is a sense of regret and hopelessness that pervades these lines, culminating in the final verse where the subject declares, "I've no land, I'm from nowhere, ashes to ashes, dust to dust". Overall, the lyrics to "Arise" are a reflection of the dark and troubled times in which we live, and a warning of the dire consequences that await if we do not take heed.

I honestly think this is a serious candidate to be one of the best thrash songs ever recorded.

@edsonponciano3769

I agree!

@1504Shawn

In my opinion, Sepultura's best song is Desperate Cry (From Arise Album as well)
It has very thrashy parts, awesome riffs, but it's longer, more complex, with a way better solo
But i agree that either Arise or Desperate Cry are some of the best thrash songs of al time

@Mysteriuminiquitatis1998

1504Shawn desparate cry is a really really good one. I agree that’s one of my faves by them. Everything about that song is amazing. The Intro for it is what got me. One of the first songs I heard by the band

I think it's amazing that a Brazilian band managed to change the metal world so absurdly all of a sudden. Best band.

@serhafiye7046

Dude the most heavy thing was Blackened back then, and they did THİS.
edit: All the things you guys said are way too underground. They didn't change the world. Sepultura did. I know Death, but they weren't famous until 1991 either. Did Slayer get famous when they released Reign in Blood? Then they can beat Metallica of course. etc. etc.
Metallica > Megadeth > Sepultura > Pantera. That's how it goes in late 80's to mid 90's for an ordinary metalhead

@jesserapkin2660

Justice was a heavy album for sure, but you had death metal bands like Morbid Angel recording in 88 and releasing Altars of Madness in ‘89. There was definitely much heavier stuff out around this time, but it was so underground. Also, the thrash community wasn’t too gung ho for the heavier music movement at first

@Jesse Rapkin Very well said.
