things i stole
Seven Mary Three Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Am I strong enough to keep my mouth shut tight,
Something in this house won't let me sleep tonight,
Sing one for tomorrow, one for the way we were

Am I man enough to say what I've done wrong,
Something in this house won't leave me alone,
Sing one for tomorrow, one for the way we were
Once for things I borrowed, one for the thing that I stole from her,
Does baby love me the way that she says she does,
Does baby love me the way that she says she does,

Does baby love me the way that she says she does,
Does your baby love you the way that she says she does.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in the song "Things I Stole" by Seven Mary Three deep dive into the inner feelings and struggles of a person who is unable to ignore their conscience. The first two lines suggest that something is troubling the singer to the point where they cannot sleep or perhaps have a guilty conscience. The following lines imply that they want to make things right; "Sing one for tomorrow, one for the way we were" indicating the desire to change their ways and being retrospective. The singer, however, is not sure if they are strong enough or man enough to do so. The line "One for the thing that I stole from her" confesses an action of theft, and the struggle of whether the baby/lover truly loves the singer serves as a reflection of the singer's guilty conscience.

The song is relatable and evokes a sense of regret and also emotions attached with the struggle. The singer is regretful of their past actions and desires to make things right in the future. There is a sense of accountability and ownership of one's mistakes, which is brave and commendable. The song speaks to those who have made mistakes in their past and who also desire to make amends, and move forward.

such a simple yet beautiful song. I sang along with this at least a half dozen times today.

One of the best songs ever written. And this band has TONS of them!

@gimmethunder

This whole album is amazing.  It's the kind of album that every time I listen to one song on it, I have to listen to all the rest.  It's a shame this is still a mostly unknown band.  I wish they would tour again.

The best music . . . grows with you, or you grow with it? I love when a line or lyric doesn't make sense, and you don't even realize that until later. In a song you know by heart, note for note, word by word, but then years later you catch it on the radio or in a store somewhere, and another part of it finally "clicks" or resonates. Now when I listen to music, I look forward to revisiting the parts that I almost disregard, that seem to have little meaning or resemblance to my life right now. Knowing that later yet another secret will be revealed and I'll be like "OH! I GET IT NOW!! THAT is what they meant!?". And it takes on a whole new meaning and you fall in love with it all over again and it's almost like hearing it for the first time all over.

PLEASE look up Stefan Edward, I swear his vocal style is a dead ringer for Jason Ross.
