The original members were Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright, and were soon joined by Tom Ellard. This later changed to Garry Bradbury, Paul Deering, and Tom Ellard; Ellard has been the only one to remain throughout the group's career, with changing lineups throughout its two and a half decades of existence, later working mainly with Stephen Jones. Robert Racic was an integral part of the band during the late eighties/early nineties.
Severed Heads performed a final concert in Sydney in January 2010. Tom Ellard uploaded a farewell video of Sevs in Space to Youtube, which may be considered as a requiem of sorts.
In early 2008, Ellard added the following text to the bottom of the official site's front page, "Severed Heads do not have a MySpace page. It is a fake. The band is dead,". (www.sevcom.com).
Now An Explosive New Movie
Severed Heads Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This head under water
This mass grave
Now, an explosive new movie
Calipers
Crutches tucked under
These useless legs
Now, an explosive new movie
Bent in submission
These scars
Now, an explosive new movie
The lyrics of Now an Explosive New Movie by Severed Heads appear to be a commentary on the exploitation and trivialization of human suffering and tragedy for the sake of entertainment. The imagery in the song describes a series of disturbing and violent situations, such as burns, a head under water, and a mass grave, all of which are presented as a prelude to the main event: an explosive new movie. The repeated refrain of "now, an explosive new movie" suggests that the horrors that have been described have been distilled into a marketable commodity, something to be consumed and packaged for mass media.
The reference to calipers and crutches tucked under useless legs implies that the individuals who have suffered these traumas have been abandoned by society and left to their own devices, forced to cope with their injuries and scars in isolation. The final line of the song, "this head bent in submission," further underscores the sense of powerlessness and resignation that pervades the lyrics. Taken together, the lyrics of Now an Explosive New Movie paint a bleak picture of a world that has lost its empathy and humanity, and instead embraces brutality and exploitation as entertainment.
