Scott and Kim first met in high school, and formed the band Sonic And Knuckles. They broke up shortly after their first gig at Lunchapalooza, as Scott was moving to Toronto. While at college, Scott met Stephen, forming the band Kid Chameleon with fellow classmate Envy Adams. Despite a record deal, relationship issues between Scott and Envy led to Stephen and Scott leaving the band, and Envy forming the successful group The Clash at Demonhead upon her move to Montreal. Sex Bob-omb was founded around the time Kim moved to Toronto. The band play concerts intermittently, and have thus far enjoyed only a little success, remaining unsigned at present.
The series was adapted into a feature-length film in 2010, titled Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World after the second comic in the series and directed by Edgar Wright. The band was portrayed by Michael Cera, Alison Pill and Mark Webber as Scott, Kim and Stephen respectively. Four of their songs, We Are Sex Bob-omb, Garbage Truck, Summertime and Threshold appear in the film's soundtrack, all of which were written by Beck Hansen, with all of the instruments being played by the actors in the film.
In the comic, the band splits after Kim moves back in with her parents, with Kim and Scott later reforming as Shatterband, while Stephen joins the band of Sex Bob-omb producer Joseph. In the film, Scott is eventually replaced by number-one fan Neil Nordegraf on bass.
In the anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the band stays together, and has Scott's ex girlfriend, Knives Chau, join the band on the keyboard, after Scott returns.
Threshold
Sex Bob-Omb Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This is the beginning of the song
I'm hearing voices, animal noises
The creme de la creme, effeminate abyss
And I'm reaching my threshold
Staring at the truth till I'm blind
My body's stupid, stereo putrid
Spilling out music into raw sewage
I'm reaching my threshold
Staring at the truth till I'm blind
My threshold
My threshold
Reaching my threshold
I'm hearing voices, animal noises
The creme de la creme, effeminate abyss
And I'm reaching my threshold
Staring at the truth till I'm blind
My threshold
I explode
Reaching my threshold
(My threshold)
My threshold

(Reaching my threshold)
My threshold
The first line, "We are Sex Bob-Omb and we're here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff!" sets the tone for the entire lyrics, which seems to meditate on dark themes such as death, the abyss, and truth. The second line, "I'm hearing voices, animal noises" introduces the idea of being distracted or disturbed by external forces, and the following line, "The creme de la creme, effeminate abyss" may allude to the idea of reaching the highest level of danger or risk, yet being encapsulated in something femininely dark or mysterious. The singer then repeats "And I'm reaching my threshold, staring at the truth till I'm blind" several times throughout the song, possibly indicating that they are in a state of crisis or revelation, being pushed to confront the harsh reality of existence. The following lines, "My body's stupid, stereo putrid, Spilling out music into raw sewage" may suggest that the singer feels trapped or confined by society, and that they are futilely attempting to express themselves creatively. The song crescendos to its climax with the repetition of "Reaching my threshold, I explode", signaling a release of pent-up emotions or an acceptance of mortality.
Overall, "Threshold" is a dense, cryptic song that explores some of the more existential themes of the Scott Pilgrim series. The lyrics are poetic and packed with vivid imagery, but also remain open to interpretation. One thing is certain, however: Sex Bob-Omb is definitely a band that aims to make its audience think, even if it means confronting uncomfortable truths.
