This Time
Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Painting notes around
The things we seem to agree on
Guessing as we go
With every move and every song
All paintings fade away
With time they're gone they never stay
Enjoy it while it lasts
You never know when paintings go away
You feel you have it all
And everything makes sense right now
The day will always come
You realize things just have to change
You never have it all
Illusions only last so long
The day will always come
When everything just has to change
You're head will always try
To patch the holes and find the peace
And some days it will work
But later on the peace will change
A different kind of way
Of living will come call your name
The painting starts to change
The old one's saved but it can't be the same
All this time we wait
Instead times flying by 'cause we are not painting
All this time we wait
Instead times flying by 'cause we are not painting
All this time we wait

Instead times flying by
'Cause we are not painting on the walls of lies.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "This Time" by Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets reflect on the transient nature of life and the inevitability of change. The lyrics describe the process of creating and enjoying the beauty of life metaphorically as painting. It portrays a sense of uncertainty and impermanence, as the paintings (representing our experiences and relationships) eventually fade away with time. The chorus emphasizes the importance of cherishing the present moment and living in the now, as we never know when things may change.

The lyrics also touch upon the human tendency to seek stability and understanding in a constantly changing world. They discuss how we may feel like we have everything figured out and that life makes sense at a particular moment, only to later realize that things are not as permanent as they seemed. The lyrics suggest that illusions and false perceptions can only last for so long before the truth of change becomes evident.

The song conveys a message of resilience and adaptability in the face of change. It acknowledges that our minds may try to make sense of the shifting circumstances and find peace among the chaos. However, it also recognizes that peace is a fleeting state, and that we must continually adjust to new ways of living as life evolves.

The repeated refrain of "All this time we wait, instead time's flying by 'cause we are not painting on the walls of lies" serves as a poignant reminder to actively engage in our lives and create meaningful experiences rather than passively waiting for things to happen. It suggests that by embracing change and actively participating in the process of life, we can find purpose and authenticity in our existence. The lyrics point to the importance of being present, flexible, and open to the transformative nature of life.
