Human for a Minute
Shame Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, just for today
We can wish away fate
And welcome the moment at hand
Whether it is deserved
May it be left undisturbed
Just for a second of peace
And as I count all my foes
Distinguished and closed
Is how I hope they remain
For this life is too long
And this world has been wronged
By sinners and saints and more

Just for today
Just for today
Why don't you stay
Just for today?

I watch my bones dry and shatter
For what purpose do they serve?
I don't feel that I can keep them
I don't feel that I deserve
To feel human for an hour
Or even for a minute
While I'm crying with the saints
And I'm laughing with the sinners
So

Just for today
Just for today
Why don't you stay
Just for today?

And I never felt human
I never felt human before
I never felt human
I never felt human before

And I never felt human before you
I never felt human before you
I never felt human before you
I never felt human before you arrived

Before you arrived
Before you arrived
Before you arrived

And I'm half the man I should be
And I'm half the man I should be
I'm half the man I should be
Can't you see?
Can't you see?
That I'm half the man I should be
I'm half the man I should be

I'm half the man I should be
You never see

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Human" by Shame delve into themes of longing for a moment of peace and a sense of humanity, as well as expressing feelings of fragility and unworthiness. The song begins by acknowledging the desire to escape from the weight of fate, even if just for a day, and embracing the present moment. The singer hopes that their adversaries remain distant and the peace they seek is undisturbed amid a world full of sinners and saints.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's internal struggles. They observe their own bones drying and shattering, questioning the purpose they serve. They express a lack of deserving to feel human, even for a short period of time, while they find themselves torn between crying with the saints and laughing with the sinners.

The bridge reveals a significant shift in perspective. The singer declares that they have never felt human before meeting someone, implying that this person has brought a newfound sense of humanity into their life. The repetition of "Before you arrived" emphasizes the transformative impact this person has had. The song concludes with a recurring line about feeling half the person they should be, suggesting a sense of inadequacy.

I love how they changed this song for the album. I think this version still feels like the old Shame whereas the album version fits well within the album and it just makes me happy to see how well they were able to pull off their second album. Truly an amazing band.
