Shane Koyczan & the Short Story Long Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The most dangerous criminal I′ve ever known has grown up sentenced to life serving time inside a maximum security prison that I call my rib cage.
From age nothing until now he has somehow managed to escape a total number of time and time again.
Which if I took the time to add up would equal every instance between now and then.
This is what happens when heart turns escape artist.
When heart refuses to let missed moments multiply themselves into a monumental waste until all that remains of the fraction of a life.
This is heart as Harry Houdini gently reminding me that as I child I planted bricks into the ground and grew walls.
I once upon a time loved to chase rainbows so learned how to cry waterfalls.
From behind these bars I've heard the lovers issuing recalls on all the "
I love you"s they ever said but never meant.
And if you ever promised me forever I′m still here wondering where the time went.
You've had me put away, locked up, locked down, living underground, prison bound, and I never made a sound 'til now.
You won′t keep me here for long.
You won′t keep me here for long.
Your plan keeps holdin' me down, I will soon be found, I will soon be found.
Your plan keeps holdin′ me down, I will soon be found, I will soon be found.
These memories and others like them stem from giving away my today and having no tomorrows.
My yesterday's wear halos because they died when I was sentenced to life for killing time.
It once seemed sane that I once wished I was born with out a rib cage so that my heart would be free to love you completely.
On the inside I am collecting the sharp looks you shot to me.
Through bars and bulletproof glass, through mass media and miss information, I am enrolling my lips in the higher education needed to speak your name with the same urgency we heard when we set off fire alarms and Richter scales.
In both prisons and jails I have sat in my cell passing the time of a life sentence by casting shadow puppets of doubt.
I have collected the sharp looks you shot to me.
They′re what I've using to tunnel out.
Like a line from a the great actor my key has got a secret fracture, any minute I′ll escape my capture.

You won't keep me here for long.
Your plan keeps holdin' me down, I will soon be found, I will soon be found...

Overall Meaning

The song "Insider" by Shane Koyczan & the Short Story Long delves into the metaphor of the heart as a dangerous criminal that has been sentenced to life inside the singer's rib cage. The criminal heart represents missed opportunities and regret, and the singer laments that the heart has managed to escape time and time again, resulting in a life that feels like a waste. Despite being locked up, the singer's heart is still a powerful escape artist, reminding him of the walls he built around himself as a child, and the missed chances to truly love and live.

The lyrics paint a picture of a life lived in prisons of different kinds, from physical maximum-security facilities to emotional and mental prisons created by regret and missed opportunities. The singer has heard the echoes of past lovers recalling their false promises of love, and he is haunted by the idea of time slipping away while he remains locked up. Despite this, the singer remains defiant, refusing to be kept in captivity for long, and vows to escape the hold his past has on him. He collects the "sharp looks" shot his way by those who have hurt him and uses them to tunnel out, striving to escape his captivity and live fully.

The song presents a powerful metaphor for the human heart and the way it can hold us captive or set us free. The line "I once upon a time loved to chase rainbows so learned how to cry waterfalls" is particularly poetic, as it speaks to the emotional highs and lows of life and how they can shape us. Overall, the song speaks to the human experience of regret and the longing for freedom, urging us to never give up on ourselves and to keep striving for a better tomorrow.

"Sometimes you just gotta colour the sun purple so you know what it feels like to be in charge"… This one makes my heart dance every time!

@Slappy2 old comment yes...but it brought it back up into my feed. I get to listen to the poem again! =)

Slappy2

Dang I know this is an old comment, but... Sometimes when I'm making 3d models, or jewelry, or just anything artistic, I'll change something up, and I only started doing that after I listened to this poem. He's right, coloring the sun purple to assert dominance over reality is just the power move I need sometimes.

I got 2- "I offer you a crush of hearts..I offer you a lifetime of held breaths" and more so- "When you made snow angels hold hands, laid them down side by side and I tied my definition of beauty to your memory."

I wish I could meet Shane one day and just talk to him, even if it was just for two minutes. His poetry is the best therapy I could ever ask for.
