My Way
Shane Mac Gowan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain,
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.
I've lived a life that's full, I traveled each and every highway,
And more, much more than this, I did it my way.

Regrets I have a few, but then again, too few to mention,
I did what I had to do, and saw it through' without exception,
I planned each chartered course,
Each careful step along the by-way.
And more, much more than this, I did it my way.

Yes there were times, I'm sure you knew,
When I bit off more than I could chew,
But through' it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up, and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall, and did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried, I've had my fill,
My share of losing, and now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.
To think I did all that, and may I say, not in a shy way
Oh, no, oh no not me, I did it my way.

For what is a man, what has he got,
If not himself, then he has not
To say the things he truly feels,

And not the words of one who kneels,
The record shows I took the blows, and did it my way

Overall Meaning

The song "My Way" by Shane Mac Gowan is a cover of the classic song by Frank Sinatra. The lyrics speak of the end of a life and the reflection upon it. The singer is proud of the choices they made and the way they lived their life. They state that they did everything on their own terms and did not let anyone else dictate their decisions. The singer acknowledges that there were setbacks and regrets along the way but they were few and far between. The lyrics also suggest that the singer had a certain degree of arrogance and confidence in their abilities, even when faced with difficulties. The song is essentially a tribute to an individualistic and non-conformist way of life.

One could interpret this song as a metaphor for life itself. The final curtain represents the end of life, and the singer seems to be at peace with it, implying that they have no fear of death. The theme of living life on one’s own terms is present throughout the song. This resonates with people who value independence and autonomy. The song emphasizes the value of living life as an individual, and not being tied down by societal norms or pressure to conform. It promotes the idea of being true to oneself and making life choices accordingly.

Is this Shane all the way through?
Because I barely recognize his voice except for the parts:

"Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew" and

"For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught".

I got all his records, with the pogues, the popes and others, but have never heard him sing like this.

(I like the lines I quote, but in all fairness the rest is a bit like an impression id Sid Viscous, isn't it. First time ever I'm having a tiny bit of criticism. I love the man! Saw him twice, twi meters away from me, with the popes, three hours to late. But it was definitely worth the wait, most people had gone already. Also I recommend the documentary "A crock of Gold" by his friend Johnny Depp. Where you really see his patronism for Ireland. And an unforgettable story about the Mouri Warriors in New Zealand when he was there, lol!!👍)
