Shanna Crooks was born in Florida on July 31, 1985. She grew up having a complicated childhood that involved moving into multiple homes, stepparents and a number of step- and half-siblings.
At the age of eighteen, Crooks moved to Nashville, TN to pursue a career in music. Shortly after moving, her songwriting caught the attention of country music superstar John Rich, who signed Crooks to a publishing deal in 2005. She was soon invited to join MusikMafia, the informal collective of Nashville-based musicians and artists co-founded by Rich and his collaborator Big Kenny Alphin. In addition to her MusikMafia ties, Crooks has performed backing vocals for artists ranging from Avenged Sevenfold and Robert Randolph to Randy Jackson and Sam Moore.
Her songs have been featured in national television campaigns for Clean & Clear (“Wakin’ Up To Love”), and recorded by major label artist Kelly Clarkson (“Can We Go Back”).
In 2007, she signed with Atlantic Records and immediately set about recording her debut album, slated for release in 2010.

Is it too late for me to run?
I'm not a shrink but I know how you boys think and
There's no such thing as a free drink
Your lucky brand jeans don't bring you luck
You think I'm looking at you, but
I'm rolling my eyes, yeah the harder that you try,
With your pick me up lines,
Oooh, you say my eyes are beautiful
But you know ,you just said it to my friend 5 minutes ago
You're gonna fly away like a helium balloon
Blowin' your hot air around the room
Pop, pop there goes the weasel, i'm
Gonna pop pop your inflated ego
You're shriveled up like a piece of rubber
Oops did I just blow your cover?
The party's over, And so are you
I'm not a child, I don't play with balloons, oooh, ooh, (pop, pop)
I don't play with balloons
Oh so, very predictable
Why don't you just forget the whole
I could get any girl in here routine
If you could see you than you'd know what I mean
You didn't even ask my name
You might wanna add that to your game
If you could stop thinking with what's in your pants, then
You just might have one in a million chance
Ooh, you say you wanna take me home
But no, up up up and away you go
You're gonna fly away like a helium balloon
Blowin' your hot air around the room
Pop, pop there goes the weasel, i'm
Gonna pop pop your inflated ego
You're shriveled up like a piece of rubber
Oops did I just blow your cover?
The party's over, And so are you
I'm not a child, I don't play with balloons, oooh, ooh, (pop, pop)
I don't play with balloons
Like the operator got your number, yeah I got you figured out
Hey Cupid, see this arrow
It's headed straight for your phony heart...(pop pop)
(CHORUS)
In Shanna Crooks's song Balloons, the singer is being approached by a man who is trying to hit on her and buy her drinks. She is able to see through his tactics and is not interested in being with him. The singer confronts the man, saying that he is not going to get anywhere with her or any woman by using pick-up lines and buying drinks. She sees through his inflated ego and pops it, telling him that she does not play with balloons. The repeated phrase "pop, pop" acts as a metaphor for the singer's rejection of the man's advances and also serves as a clever play on words.
One interesting aspect of the song is the use of metaphor throughout the lyrics. The singer compares the man to a helium balloon, saying that he is full of hot air and will eventually be popped. Additionally, the phrase "up up and away" is a direct reference to a 1960's song by the same name which was popularized by the group The 5th Dimension. This adds a nostalgic element to the song.
Another interesting aspect of the song is its feminist and empowering message. The singer is not afraid to stand up for herself and call out the man's lack of substance. The line "I'm not a child, I don't play with balloons" emphasizes that the singer is a confident and independent woman who will not be swayed by shallow tactics.
