Done With You
Shannon and the Clams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Waiting for the one that i should hold close tonight
The sun is rising and I’m still here alone
I still carry that polaroid of you
But do i ever cross your mind
You still run in my mind all the time
It’s like you never left
My time with you felt like a dream
Oh look how happy we were holding hands
They said that all good things must come to an end
But I don’t want things to end this way
You felt so close yet so far away
Oh how am i going to bring you back
Your arms was a place I once called home
And I am wandering the streets alone
Oh will you please take me back into your arms
I just want to be loved by you
My time with you felt like a dream
Oh look how happy we were holding hands
They said that all good things must come to an end
But I don’t want things to end this way
Oh baby I don’t think I can let go
Of all the memories that we shared
I don’t know what I’d do without you
You’ve always been my favourite
My time with you felt like a dream
Oh look how happy we were holding hands
They said that all good things must come to an end
But I don’t want things to end this way

My time with you felt like a dream
Oh look at us kiss as the sun sets behind us

The singer expresses a yearning for the person they should be holding close, but finds themselves alone as the sun rises. The mention of a polaroid photograph signifies a tangible reminder of the person they still hold dear, questioning whether they occupy the other person's thoughts as well.

The reminiscence of the time spent together with this person is described as feeling like a dream, highlighting the happiness and contentment experienced in their presence. Despite the inevitable end that all good things must come to, the singer expresses a reluctance for their relationship to conclude in such a manner. The feeling of emotional closeness yet physical distance adds to the sense of longing and desire to bring back the person they once felt at home with.

The plea to be taken back into the other person's arms conveys a deep longing for love and connection, portraying a sense of vulnerability and dependence on their partner for emotional fulfillment. The memories shared between the singer and this person hold significant value, as they confess an uncertainty about how they would navigate life without them and proclaim them as their favorite.

The image of kissing as the sun sets symbolizes a moment of intimacy and closeness, perhaps suggesting a bittersweet farewell or a wistful remembrance of their time together. Overall, the lyrics of "Done With You" by Shannon and the Clams paint a poignant picture of love lost, yearning for reconnection, and cherishing the memories of a past relationship that felt like a dream.

The more I listen to these guys the more I am convinced they are the reincarnated souls of rock n roll personified. It is a rare occurence that any band have a truely great lead singer but with these guys they have two very fine vocalists.
