Mother Earth
Sharon Burch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day looking down on sunny skies
Wishing your life into mine
Why am I confined so high
In this costume that makes me cry
I sit here praying that my dream
Will come and save me from this scene
I hope that there will be a day
where I could join you straight away
Life, life
Help me follow life wherever it goes
Life, life
Help me follow life wherever it goes
I'm living in a world of dreams
Help me follow life wherever it goes
I'm sitting, waiting for a means
Help me follow life wherever it goes
One day, I was wondering who I'd be
In your luscious greens and deep blue sea
We were running through the land
Playing games and holding hands
My ears are full of brand new sounds
My head is spinning round and round
The wind, it conjures all its scents
For this Earth, I'm really meant
Life, life
Help me follow life wherever it goes
Life, life
Help me follow life wherever it goes
I'm living in a world of dreams
Help me follow life wherever it goes
I'm sitting, waiting for a means
Help me follow life wherever it goes
Life, life
Help me follow life wherever it goes
Life, life
Help me follow life wherever it goes

Help me follow life wherever it goes
Help me follow life wherever it goes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sharon Burch's song, "Mother Earth," speak to the human experience of feeling confined and disconnected from nature. The singer longs to escape their current reality and join the natural world, represented by "luscious greens and deep blue sea." The idea of conforming to societal expectations, represented by the "costume that makes me cry," is contrasted against the freedom and joy found in nature. The repetition of "Help me follow life wherever it goes" emphasizes the singer's desire to break free from their constraints and live in harmony with the earth.

The imagery in the song paints a vivid picture of the beauty and wonder of nature, from the brand new sounds to the conjured scents. The longing to experience these sensations is palpable, as the singer sits and waits for a means to escape. The song can be interpreted as a call to reconnect with the natural world, to shed the constructs of society and embrace the freedom and beauty that can be found in nature. It is a reminder to listen to the earth and follow where it leads.

A beautiful and instantly captivating voice like Alanis Morissette. I bought this album for my love on the basis of the first opening bars. She encapsulates the wild and untamable spirit which has characterised the Native American nations. I wish her every success and joy for the future. Truly a name which should be better known. What a wonderful find on the 'Spiritpass' CD web site.

A very beautiful voice. Recently I often listened to songs performed by singers of the Sami (people living in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland). There seem to be strong similarities, although Navajo and Sami live very far apart from each other.
