According to his own account, in his youth his friends referred to him as "Dez, man" - thus creating his artistic pseudonym Desman. His self-titled breakthrough album in 2002 featured three top ten singles ("Shook", "Spread My Wings" and "Get Ready") on the Canadian charts. The album went on to achieve gold certification in Canada.
His follow up, Back for More (2005), with more sexual lyrics, reached number fifty on the Canadian airplay charts. His single from that album, "Let's Go", reached number six on the MuchMusic Countdown. He is currently signed with Sony BMG Music (Canada). Desman is also known for sporting the "sidehawk" hair style, a sort of diagonal mohawk. "Spread My Wings" was a featured song in the movie Kangaroo Jack. Desman was also spotted in the movie Honey alongside Jessica Alba, performing his song "Sexy".

What can I do? What can you do?
Sitting at home all alone just watching my t.v
The news comes on the world's gone wrong
That's how it seems to me
See people dying , people crying, got no food to eat
It ain't my life so tell me why it means so much to me?
It's not too late to make a brand new start
[Chorus]
Here and now, I believe
There are solutions to the problems we see
We should all take a chance
Don't be afraid to lend a helping hand
This world could be so beautiful,
If we just worked together to make a difference today.
Lalalalala la
Oh yeah yeah
I took a walk down by the school yard where I used to play
Now there's no children only people spending wasted days
The same old lady holds her hand out by the corner store
I always give her what I can you know she still needs more
Let's try to open our hearts
It's not too late to make a brand new start
[Chorus]
Here and now, I believe
There are solutions to the problems we see
We should all take a chance
Don't be afraid to lend a helping hand
This world could be so beautiful,
If we just worked together to make a difference today.
Just gotta make a difference
Yay yeah
Open up your eyes
Don't you realize they need you
Let's not run away, listen when I say
That I believe, if we just opened our hearts
It's not too late to make a brand new start
[Chorus]
Here and now, I believe
There are solutions to the problems we see (problems we see)
We should all take a chance (take a chance)
Don't be afraid to lend a helping hand (a helping hand)
This world could be so beautiful,
If we just worked together to make
Here and now, (here and now), I believe
There are solutions to the problems we see (problems we see)
We should all take a chance (just take a chance)
Don't be afraid to lend a helping hand (a helping hand)
This world could be so beautiful, (so beautiful baby)
If we just worked together to make,

The lyrics to Shawn Desman's song "Difference" call for action towards changing the world for the better. The first verse begins with the question of what needs to be done to improve the world and the statement that change is needed. The second verse paints a picture of despair, with people suffering and dying due to lack of food, and the artist expressing his empathy despite the fact that it is not his personal experience. The chorus offers hope that together, people can make a difference and create a better world. The artist believes that solutions exist, and encourages listeners to take that first step towards helping others. The final verse emphasizes the importance of opening one's heart and taking action to make a change.
