Their name was a tribute to Tara Maclean's sister Shaye Martirano who died on May 24, 2002, as the result of injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident earlier that day on the Trans-Canada Highway in St. Leonard, she was aged 26.
Shaye's debut album The Bridge (produced by Bill Bell and Jay Joyce) was released in 2003 on EMI Music Canada. The album features songs by Ron Hynes, Sinead Lohan and Crash Vegas. Support for the album included shows in Canada and Japan. "Happy Baby" the lead single, was nominated for Single of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards. This was followed up by "Beauty" in January 2005.
Their 2006 follow up, Lake Of Fire was released on EMI Music Canada. It was exclusively available on iTunes in November 2006, then released physically in February 2007. It was produced by Jay Joyce (Patty Griffin, Tim Finn, Chantal Kreviazuk) and features songs by Van Morrison, The Waterboys and Ron Sexsmith.
On October 8, 2007, Tara MacLean announced that she was leaving the trio.
After MacLean's departure, Stockwood and Doyle announced on their website they would continue making music together as "Shaye". In 2009 Shaye's official website was redirected to MySpace where it was announced the band was officially no longer together. Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle thanked their fans for all of their support.
Stockwood returned to a solo career while Doyle has formed a new band The Heartbroken which features three of the former members of Shaye's band.

In an unfamiliar land
You know it's a bridge you are going to walk on
And the only thing you know is
Everything you know
Will do you no good from here on
And the day that you spin
Well, you can't be prepared
For the beauty you'll find there
And you will find beauty
In the toughest of places
And I will be thinking of you out there
So pick up your bags
Look around at your friends
And you know none of them
Would ever have enough strength
To cross the bridge and lose control
I never felt this bold
Never felt this good
And the day that you spin
From your little cocoon
Well, you can't be prepared
For the beauty you'll find there
And you will find beauty
In the toughest of places
And I will be thinking of you
Stay true to your nomad skies
Keep your eyes out for coyote
A thousand secrets are lost
In the archival dust
So lay your ears upon the tracks
One day you will come back
With wrinkled hands and grey hair
And there you will stand on the spot
And you'll marvel how the place is still the same
Though you are somebody else now
Fly on butterfly
And the day that you spin
From your little cocoon
Well, you can't be prepared
For the beauty you'll find there
And you will find beauty
In the toughest of places
And I will be thinking of you out there
The song “Beauty” by Shaye is about embarking on a journey into the unknown, where one must cross a bridge into unfamiliar territory. The lyrics convey a sense of excitement and trepidation, as the singer prepares to leave behind everything they know and venture into the great unknown. The song suggests that beauty can be found in any place, even in the toughest of circumstances, and that the journey itself is what makes life worth living.
The lyrics “So you’ve come to this bridge in an unfamiliar land, you know it’s a bridge you are going to walk on, and the only thing you know is everything you know will do you no good from here on” suggest a sense of uncertainty and risk-taking. The singer is aware that they are leaving behind everything familiar for something completely new, and they are aware that none of their previous knowledge or experiences will help them navigate this new terrain. The line “And you will find beauty in the toughest of places” shows that the singer is prepared for hardship, but also optimistic that beauty can be found anywhere.
The song is about the transformative power of journeys, and the idea that the greatest beauty of all is the sense of exhilaration and excitement that comes with exploring new places and meeting new people. The lyrics “One day you will come back with wrinkled hands and grey hair, and there you will stand on the spot, and you'll marvel how the place is still the same, though you are somebody else now” suggest that the journey will change the singer in profound ways. Ultimately, the song is a celebration of the courage and excitement that comes with embarking on a journey into the unknown.
