Born in Ottawa, Canada, he first gained attention through his videos on YouTube under the username 'elshaynez'. In 2010, he submitted a video audition for the first season of "MBC Star Audition: The Great Birth", a reality-singing competition program in South Korea. Despite not understanding Korean, Shayne came to prominence in South Korea after placing third in the first season of the program. After signing to Sony Music Entertainment Korea in September 2011, Shayne released his debut single, a remake of "Last Christmas", in November 2011. His debut album, The Gift, was released shortly after in December 2011. His original song from that album, "The Story", was used in the popular Korean drama series Flower Boy Ramen Shop.
