The band was formed by two members of Okkervil River, back-up vocalist and accordion/keyboard player Jonathan Meiburg and singer and guitarist Will Sheff, so they could write quieter songs. Beginning in 2005, Sheff lessened his role in the band, leaving Meiburg as the band's songwriter from Palo Santo on.
Band members today include Jonathan Meiburg, Thor Harris, Kim Burke, Lucas Oswald, with many contributions from others. The touring band in 2012 featured producer/drummer Danny Reisch and guitarist/vocalist Mitch Billeaud of The Lemurs and Christiaan Mader of Brass Bed.
To date, Shearwater has released nine full-length albums The Dissolving Room, Everybody Makes Mistakes, Winged Life, Palo Santo, Rook, The Golden Archipelago, Animal Joy, and Jet Plane & Oxbow as well as EPs Thieves and The Snow Leopard, and a split LP with Okkervil River entitled Sham Wedding/Hoax Funeral, as well as an album of covers of former touring partners, Fellow Travelers, released in November 2013.
As an ornithologist and writer, Meiburg has a unique perspective. The songs of Palo Santo were partly written at the Galápagos Islands in the footsteps of Charles Darwin. Rook was influenced by studies in the Falklands Islands and by the current mass extinction we are living through. The Golden Archipelago examined the destruction of island cultures in the 20th century and beyond. Animal Joy returned to more personal concerns; Meiburg stated repeatedly in interviews that the foundational idea is that life is most real when "the blood flows fastest and closest to the surface." Fellow Travelers started as a small home EP and expanded into a full album celebrating relationships with the other bands they've met along the way.
Whipping Boy
Shearwater Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That I would have paid just about any price
Just to see him jump, just to see him laugh
I would have washed in the blood of an innocent man
Let the whipping boy ride
The boy says to the wolf, "You're gonna be my dog"
The wolf says, "Boy, if you're gonna be my man
Let's see how you fit in those britches"
I found a river that doesn't run to the sea
I found a river through the dead lands
I found a river that's been beaten by the sun
But a river that never did surrender to the sands
Let the whipping boy ride
I want to see him
The lyrics to Shearwater’s song, Whipping Boy, are both cryptic and evocative, requiring a deeper analysis to interpret their meaning. The first verse speaks of the singer's willingness to pay any price for the chance to see someone "jump" or "laugh." The imagery here suggests a great deal of anticipation, but as the verse develops, it becomes apparent that there is far more to this request than a simple desire for amusement. The line, "I would have washed in the blood of an innocent man," drips with biblical overtones, conjuring images of sacrifice and redemption.
The second verse presents a dialogue between a boy and a wolf. The boy ties up the wolf and the wolf challenges the boy to see if he has what it takes to be a man. The lyrics here suggest themes of dominance, submission, and questioning traditional notions of power structures.
The final verse turns to a river, one that seems to defy the odds by running through dead lands beaten by the sun. The imagery employed here echoes that of the prior verses, suggesting a kind of resilience in the face of adversity. Taken together, the lyrics of Whipping Boy paint a complex and thought-provoking picture of power, sacrifice, and resilience.

I love the vibe and tonality of this song! Reminds me a bit of Sufjan Stevens (the loopiness, the banjo, the strange chords)

The concert was mesmerizing. Sadly, they didn't play the song. I met the band and they were all very sweet. The band are great at connecting to their audience.
