Whilst growing up, Nicholls attended Felsted School. She first found fame for performing cartwheels whilst streaking at an England vs. Australia cricket match at Lord's in May 1989, in which she joined fellow school players Derek Pringle and John Stephenson on the field of play; this footage was later included in the video Streaker, narrated by George Best.
Nicholls travelled to the United States later in 1989 and began performing with her band, Sheila Nicholls and the Splendid Frock, in New York City in the mid-1990s.
Nicholls then moved to Los Angeles where she recorded a solo album, the critically acclaimed Brief Strop, and started her own label, Essex Girl Records.
Shortly thereafter, Nicholls signed a deal with Hollywood Records, which began distributing Brief Strop. The song "Fallen for You," from the album, became a hit on College Radio stations and found its way onto the best-selling soundtrack for the movie High Fidelity. She toured extensively with the album, including several gigs alongside k.d. lang.
In mid-2002, Nicholls released her second album, Wake, in which she worked with producers Glen Ballard and Jez Colin. The album's first single, "Faith," co-written with Ballard, received ample radio play and reached the pop charts. Nicholls third album, "Songs From the Bardo" was released in August 2009.

And choosing to be full
I'm on a boat, I'm in a lake, I'm with the water I see the trees
I'm with the sun I see the moon I touch the sky
And I'm with you
I'm with you
And how long would it take
Five stories under debris
You and me in the garden indefinitely
After 10 hours were thinking about food
We lost our voices from shouting, and screaming
And crying and singing and being really crude
My tummy rumbles but theres' no guitar so we have sex instead and we go so far
And we do that for days til we're knee deep in cum
Dehydrated , exhausted, insane aquarium
I'm with you... I am with you
And how long would it take
If we were trapped in an elevator after the earthquake
Five stories under debre
You and me in the garden indefinitely
And I remember the hunger from the last time, still hear I remember the hunger
And I remember the hunger from the last time, still hear I remember the hunger
This could go one of two ways
Hollywood rescue or bodies and boques
Found after 3 months
Smiling and bloated
The colors were great the smells they were quoted
And I'm with you ... I am with you
I'm with you ...
So I'm am full
I'm choosing to be full
The song "Elevator" by Sheila Nicholls is a reflection on the power of human connection and the triumph of the human spirit against extreme adversity. The opening lines suggest that the singer is content and fulfilled, surrounded by nature, and with someone they love. The repetition of "I'm with you" highlights the importance of this connection to the singer's sense of happiness and satisfaction.
However, the second half of the song takes a more dramatic turn. The singer imagines being trapped in an elevator with their loved one after an earthquake. They are cut off from the world outside and must rely solely on each other for survival. Over time, their limited resources and the stress of the situation begin to wear on them, until they turn to sex as a way of coping. The imagery of being "knee deep in cum" and "an insane aquarium" highlights the overwhelming nature of their experience.
Despite the potential for a tragic end, the song ends on a note of resilience and determination. The singer declares that they are "choosing to be full" even in the face of danger and uncertainty. Overall, "Elevator" is a powerful meditation on the importance of human relationships and the ability of individuals to overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
