Silverstein's passion for music was clear early on as he studied for a while at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. As a songwriter, Silverstein kept a low profile but cast a long shadow. He tended to shun publicity and even photographers. Nonetheless, his musical output included many songs which were hits for other artists. Most notably, he wrote the music and lyrics for "A Boy Named Sue" that was performed by Johnny Cash (for which he won a Grammy in 1970); "One's on the Way" (which was a hit for Loretta Lynn), and "The Unicorn Song" which, despite having nothing to do with Ireland nor Irish culture, became the signature piece for The Irish Rovers in 1968 and is popular in pubs all over the world to this day. He wrote the lyrics and music for most of the Dr. Hook songs, including "Cover of the Rolling Stone", "Freakin' at the Freakers' Ball", "Sylvia's Mother", and the cautionary song about VD, "Don't Give a Dose to the One You Love Most". He also wrote many of the songs performed by Bobby Bare, including "Marie Laveau", "Rosalie's Good Eats Cafe", "The Mermaid", "The Winner", and "Tequila Sheila". The song "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan",] recorded in 1979 by Marianne Faithfull and later featured in the films Montenegro and Thelma & Louise, was also by Silverstein.
Liberated Lady 1999

And she don't need your protection,
And she does not want your help.
And if you're lookin' for some pretty flower,
You better go look somewhere else,
'Cause I warn you, she's a liberated lady.
She got off work at the foundry... she was feelin' kind of beat.
And she pinched the ass of a guy who passed her
Walkin' down the street.
When he called a cop, she didn't quite understand
So she stopped off on the corner for her usual shot of rye
When some guy lit her cigarette, she punched him in the eye.
Then he kicked her in the balls, it was enough to make her cry,
But she stood there and she took it like a man.
She's a liberated lady, and she smokes them big cigars.
You're gonna find her drinkin' boilermakers at the corner bar.
And in 30 seconds flat, she'll change a flat tire on your car.
Look out -- she's a liberated lady.
She come home to find her darlin' husband cryin' in distress
She said, "Why ain't supper ready and why is this house a mess".
He said, "The kids have drove me crazy, and I need a brand-new dress.
And how come you don't ever take me dancin'?"
She sat down to smoke her pipe, and she thought back to the time
When she was satin, silk and lace with nothing on her mind.
But now she's gotta mow the lawn and pay the bills on time
And pray to Mrs. God, she don't get drafted.
They got into bed that evening, and she strapped her dildo on
She climbed on top of him and said, "Okay, let's get it on".
He said, "You know I've got my period and my headache isn't gone ".
And he fell asleep, the chauvinistic bastard.
But she's a liberated lady, and she smokes them big cigars.
You're gonna find her drinkin' boilermakers at the corner bar.
And in 30 seconds flat, she'll change a flat tire on your car.
Look out, she's a liberated lady.
The song Liberated Lady by Shel Silverstein is about a woman who is independent, strong, and doesn't need anyone to protect or help her. She's described as a woman who isn't interested in being seen as a pretty flower and is capable of handling herself in any situation. In the first verse, she's shown to have various encounters throughout the day, from someone stealing her seat on the bus to a man calling the cops on her for pinching him. Despite it all, she doesn't let anyone dictate how she lives her life and stands tall to face the consequences.
The second verse shows her reacting to her husband's grievances, where she realizes how much she's had to change from being a woman with nothing on her mind to someone who mows the lawn and pays the bills on time. But the song ends on a humorous note where, despite her husband's attitude, she's still in control and is able to take pleasure in herself.
In all, the song could be interpreted as a commentary on the expectations placed on women, and how even when they try to live their lives on their own terms, they're still subjected to societal pressures and the expectations of others.
