Stormy Weather
Shelby Lynne/Willie Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky, stormy weather
Since my gal and I ain't together, keeps raining all the time
Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere, stormy weather
Just can't get my poor old self together
I'm weary all the time, the time
So weary all the time

When she went away the blues walked in and they met me
If she stays away, that old rocking chair's gonna get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Can't go on, everything I had is gone, stormy weather
Since my gal and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all the time

(When she went away the blues walked in and they met me
If she stays away, that old rocking chair's will get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more)

Can't go on, everything I had is gone, stormy weather
Since my gal and I ain't together

Keeps raining all the time, the time
Keeps raining all the time

Overall Meaning

The song "Stormy Weather" is a classic blues/jazz song that has been covered by numerous artists over the years. The lyrics tell the story of a man who is feeling lost and alone since his lover has left him. He can't seem to find any joy in life and everything around him is bleak and miserable because she is no longer with him. He is so sad and weary that he can barely function and is constantly longing for her to return.

The line "When she went away the blues walked in and they met me" is particularly powerful because it perfectly captures the idea of depression and sadness being tangible things that can invade a person's life. The man is personifying his emotional state and describing it as something that has physically come into his life and taken over. He is so consumed by his sadness that he fears he will never be able to get out of it and will remain trapped in the stormy weather forever.

In contrast, the line "All I do is pray the Lord above will let me walk in the sun once more" offers a glimmer of hope that things may get better. The man is reaching out to a higher power, hoping that if he prays hard enough, he will be able to overcome his despair and find happiness again. This song is a reminder of the power of love and the devastating effects that losing it can have on a person.

i don t get enough of the old Shelby Lynne songs. she is the best, interpreting songs of all genres. her 90s album Temptation shows her versatility capped off by one of the lesser known but most beautiful ballads Where We Go From Here. each song on that album is like a different artist, she is that versatile. Wish she would have stayed with those types of songs, but people have to stretch and experiment, as they say. i always go back to Shelby as she sings with such greats as Willie Nelson and others, as well as the big bands. she doesn t sing a song, she interprets a song and is in the moment. the words and music move her as she moves the listener.
