Harnick began his career writing words and music to comic songs in musical revues. One of these, "The Merry Minuet", was popularized by the Kingston Trio. It is in the caustic style usually associated with Tom Lehrer and is sometimes incorrectly attributed to him.
Sunrise Sunset

Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
I don′t remember growing older
When did they?
When did she get to be a beauty?
Wasn't it yesterday, when they were small?
Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming, even as they gaze
Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset
The song "Sunrise Sunset" by Sheldon Harnick is a poignant reflection on the passage of time and the bittersweetness of growing older. The first verse asks the question of where the children - a girl and a boy - have gone, since it feels like only yesterday that they were young and carefree. The second verse marvels at how the children have grown and changed, becoming beautiful and tall seemingly overnight. The chorus then repeats the phrase "Sunrise Sunset" to emphasize how quickly time seems to slip away, as if the days and years are flying by in a blur.
The song's main message is that life is fleeting and we must cherish every moment, because before we know it, our youth and vitality will have passed us by. The idea of "seedlings turning into sunflowers" represents how quickly our lives can change and blossom, and how we should strive to make the most of every opportunity. The final lines of the song acknowledge that life is not always happy, and that there will be ups and downs along the way. However, the overall tone of the song is one of wistful nostalgia, as we look back on our lives and wonder where the time has gone.
