You Cheated
Shields Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You cheated, you lied,
You said that you love me
You cheated, you lied
You said that you want me
Oh, what can I do
but just keep on loving you?

Love is something you know nothing about
Love is somethng you can't throw about
So please try to love me
Love me like I love you

Oh, please try to love me
Love me like I love you

You cheated, you lied
You said that you want me
You cheated, you lied,
You said that you love me
Oh, what can I do?

Oh, what can I do?
Oh, what can I do?

The lyrics highlight the singer's struggle with coming to terms with their partner's actions as they confess their love for the deceitful partner, despite the pain they caused. The chorus, "You cheated, you lied, You said that you love me, You cheated, you lied, You said that you want me, Oh, what can I do but just keep on loving you," emphasizes the singer's feeling of helplessness in the situation.

The second verse of the song, "Love is something you know nothing about, Love is something you can't throw about, So please try to love me, Love me like I love you," reveals the singer's knowledge of their partner's lack of understanding of true love, and their plea for the partner to reciprocate the same love they have been offering.

How much of todays' music do older people listen to? Not much, they're literally ignorant of what's out there. It doesn't have the same soul? I really beg to differ. Human emotion is unchanging and we'll always be writing songs to reflect our feelings.
Music, over lyrics, has always been the first and foremost way of reflecting these feelings, and no that we have new technology, we're even more unlimited than ever in how we can utilize that alone. (For instance, many songs back then didn't consider a low end and were recorded to be played back on shitty car stereos the size of your fist on some janky AM station. They could play, let along consider having some of the beautiful musical layering we can have today.)

And, yeah, we do have a different society today. (As great a tune as it is, I pray to God a song like Patches, or Leader of the Pack will never be written again, that no one could forbid their daughter or son from someone she loves based on some silly notion of 'class') There are some better things, there are some worse. But again, topical songs aside, human emotion is timeless and decades aren't any more 'true' than another.

There are so many songs from this golden era you speak of that came and went, they're just not as easily recalled as videos in the digital age, as physical media can be more easily buried. In fact, you'll notice that novelty hits are going DOWN in the charts as we get away from the goofy 50s.

I love this shit as much as you do, I just don't feel the need to justify that love with a baseless hate for the new. At least I try to remain something other than ignorant.
You're disgusting.

I was born in 49 and no modern music comes close to this era. My era, the sixties and seventies also never came close.

This is one true Doo-Wop classic no one has ever had the courage to try to do live. From the 1st time I heard it, I asked : " How did they do it?? ". These harmonies are so difficult & yet, note perfect, we'll not ever hear the likes of it, again. All-time, Best ever, classic Doo Wop. Wolfsky9

I sometime wish I could change back the hands of time. I get very emotional and do cry. But it's okay I'm 67 now and when I listen to oldies I'm back in 1953-1959. I would not change this for a second.

This is THE one great all-time classic Doo-Wop Masterpiece never, ever imitated, or to my knowledge, even attempted! How could anyone do it this good?? Recall, 4 tracks, 5 voices, 2 guitars, & this masterpice of love lost. Anyone who cannot relate --let me tell you--live long enough, & you will. Wolfsky9, 67 y/o Now
