Secret Love
Shirley Bassey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I had a secret love,
That lived within the heart of me
All too soon my secret love,
Became impatient to be free

So I told a friendly star,
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are,
And why I'm so in love with you

Now, I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils
At last my hearts an open door,

And my secret love's
No secret anymore.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shirley Bassey's song "Secret Love" tell a story of a hidden love that yearns to be revealed. The opening line, "Once I had a secret love, that lived within the heart of me" implies a deep, unspoken affection. The singer feels compelled to keep her love hidden, but eventually, she becomes tired of suppressing her true emotions. "All too soon my secret love became impatient to be free," suggests that the singer can no longer contain her feelings.

In the second stanza, the singer confides in a "friendly star" and shares her love for her beloved. This act of confiding in the star, "the way that dreamers often do," implies that the singer has been dreaming of revealing her love for some time now. She describes her beloved as "wonderful," and explains why she is so in love with them.

The final stanza is a proclamation of love that has been set free. "Now I shout it from the highest hills," suggests that the singer is no longer limited by her fear of expressing her love. She has reached a point where she is comfortable revealing her true feelings to the world. The act of telling the "golden daffodils" further emphasizes her newfound confidence, as she declares that her heart is now an open door, and her "secret love's no secret anymore."

Thank you, Shirley. . . She was special beyond words. . . I bought this record BEFORE I had a record player. Your "Goldfinger" continues to be one of my very favorites...!

WHAT CAN I SAY Doris Day WAS MY FAVORITE AND WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART MAY SHE REST IN PEACE

So synonymous with Doris Day that it doesn't 'sit' easily on the ear when it is sung by another voice and as big a fan of DSB as I am, this song belongs to Doris just as Goldfinger belongs to Shirley. That said, I really enjoy hearing DSB sing it.

What a wonderful video tribute to my favorite singer/actress Doris Day. I never heard Shirley Bassey's "Secret Love," but I have many of her cds. I've always been a fan, and have seen her many times in concert.

Thank you Howard for your wonderful comments!  As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan of Doris Day, and all of her work from music, to film, to TV, etc etc etc.  Although these two ladies are not similar in their vocal styles, I for one think they are both excellent and have both achieved the pinnacle of their profession.

Love Shirley but no one does this song like Doris Day! Shirley was an hon member of a 1980s UK fan club for Miss Day that I was a member of- along with Rosemary Clooney.

Of course this will always be Doris Day's song, and this clip was never meant to intend anything different.  I'm a fan of both Ms. Shirley Bassey and Ms. Doris Day, and I respect both for reaching the top of their profession.  I also enjoy and respect the differences on how each artist approached this song.
